When I first heard the term, I thought it was ridiculous and untrue because rape is not celebrated here... it's against the law and rapists go to jail. Maybe in undeveloped countries, but not the United States of America. I thought it was a made-up feminist lie when I first heard about it.

After I read the article "A Rape on Campus" in Rolling Stone, in which a young girl was led to a frat party and then brutally raped by a bunch of evil frat bros, my initial reaction was "Okay, maybe rape culture IS real!" I remember thinking that the frat brothers in the story were vicious and inhuman... and that maybe college fraternity life was a lot darker than I thought.

However, it eventually came out that the author fabricated the entire story... she never actually confirmed the events with anyone other than the "victim", and apparently the "victim" just made the whole thing up for attention (she's married now, btw).

After that, I realized that I was just fed lies from the beginning and "rape culture" doesn't actually exist in the western world. It made me lose all respect I had for the feminist movement. The fraternity that was falsely accused had rocks thrown into their windows, graffiti spelling out "RAPISTS LIVE HERE" on their building, and the individual students were bullied and received death threats. All for nothing. I remember reading one article where a journalist interviewed the rock-throwing students and they said that they weren't sorry and that the ends justified the means. This is what happens when you lie to people and get them to enact violence...

Anyway, there are plenty of other examples I could post on why the feminist movement has completely fallen flat and no longer is about equal rights, but the retracted Rolling Stone piece is proof that "rape culture" is just a fantasy made up by feminists to vilify men. Nothing like that actually exists in America.

Here's a link if you haven't heard of the Rolling Stone fabricated piece: http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0407-goldberg-rolling-stone-campus-rape-story-20150407-column.html

I think calling it rape culture was a mistake because that makes it seem like raping is the hip thing to do, which clearly isn't the case. What the term is really talking about is the tenancy to blame, downplay, or even flat out not believe women when they've been sexually assaulted or raped. It's speaking out against the people that blame women's apparel. It's speaking out against men who try to get women intoxicated just so she'll be more complacent with their sexual advances. Is rape celebrated and encouraged in the U.S? No, however, too often do men think certain things are ok due to a culture that turns the other way when faced with a difficult problem to combat.

1. Having sex with multiple partners and later regretting it is not rape.

2. That's a fair point... not a lot is done to prevent prison rape.

3. Religion is a bad thing, I agree, but at least the current administration is working to root out all the pedophiles in the Catholic Church. But yes, that is a very good and fair point... religions really do try to protect rape culture. Look no further than the pope or the Rotherham scandal.

I've actually never played any of those games. I couldn't figure out how serious they were from the trailers. On one end they're channeling the Japanese gangster movies of the eighties and nineties, and those were super serious and violent, and not usually my cup of tea, but then they're also supposedly really funny, and maybe even absurd. That makes me think Suda51, but that might not quite right. And then there's the game play. At a glance, Sleeping Dogs comes to mind, but then it claims to be an RPG, something I've not really associated with the franchise.

It's on my steam watchlist. If the right sale comes along, I might just buy it on impulse.

Yeah but getting raped and then getting laughed at for it is rape, dont fucking deflect to other scenarios just because police act shitty towards rape victims.

The girl from the Rolling Stone made this point too though. She went to the police, couldn't give them any useful information or facts (because the rape didn't happen), and then the police couldn't help her. She blamed the police and said they were part of the problem... I highly, highly doubt that your ordinary police officer would laugh and say "yeah, right" if a rape is reported. They have rape kits that they can use to confirm something happened. It seems to me that police are only skeptical in "he said, she said" cases where the man claims consent was given, but the girl retroactively withdraws consent. Feminists are NOT helping this because they are telling women that rape is "whenever you FEEL that it's rape"... which is NOT the definition. Consent has to be withdrawn during the act, not right after or a few weeks after. It's not rape them, just a falsified report.

Rape is illegal, that's really the end of discussion. And you'd probably get fired from most jobs these days for even making a tongue in cheek joke about it.

I'm not saying there aren't instances of some very sad stories out there but there are shitty people and the world isn't always a nice place. And it never will be, but rape is most definitely viewed as one of the worst things you can do by a vast majority of people. So the concept of a accepted rape culture is pretty rediculous.

No one's saying "rape claims are never true". Just that the standard for believing them has gotten so ridiculously low that anyone (or at least, any women, because they're strangely silent when the topic turns to male victims) can just accuse "rape" with no plausibility whatsoever and be believed.

False claims are a minority, by far. They always have been, they still are. But they do exist, and they're far more tolerated than they should be. That's the problem.

That's a good way to put it. That's generally how I feel about it. The Rolling Stone article made it seem like there are sinister "rape clubs" all over America, or that it's something that all men are in on and actively try to keep a secret but I don't think that's the case at all... well, except when it comes to the Catholic Church. Even then, little boys are usually the targets there and as such I don't see outcries from feminists about them. Kinda weird how the user that brought up the best points in this topic made a case for rape culture existing against men but not women (prison, church).
