1. The real estate market and renting costs are incredibly expensive. Most recent college graduates have considerable debt, and also take on jobs with entry level pay that cannot adequately pay down their student loans, afford decent housing, and also provide for bills/retirement savings. Living at home to avoid paying rent so you can pay down student loans and begin funding retirement sets up a fantastic foundation for your financial future. After you get your bearings and develop your career, you will be in an advantageous position to find housing you can afford

Nah I don't take it personally, I just think young people shouldn't feel compelled to move out from societal pressures. It's more important to save up young so their early retirement contributions can earn compound growth and ensure a good retirement

Apparently, there's some cultures where the eldest child is actually expected to live with their parents well into adulthood.

Doesn't make me feel any better tho.

As someone who did move out after graduation (well, before, but details), it's financially smarter to stay with your guardians. It's antiquated to claim everyone should do this. I mean, some people combine their families for this ease of living.

Now, I wouldn't redo shit lol Just acknowledging I spent more cash/time than I needed trying to budget with minimum wage and acceptable living conditions.

I grew up with Mexican neighbors and it was not abnormal for their sons to marry and then come back with their wives in the main house.

No, the problem is Colleges and Universities and to another extent, idiots in charge of companies.

Not every fucking job should require a bachelors. You dont need a bachelors to run a billing dept at some insurance company or something. You dont need a bachelors to be a friggin Secretary.

And they wonder why people are not loyal to their employers anymore??? Its because theyre trying to pay off a massive student loan and are constantly trying to upgrade their salary.

Stop making stupid jobs having a bachelors requirement.

Obviously there are many jobs that require bachelors or masters. Most office jobs are easy as fuck as long as you get the proper training.

The thing is, the whole "move out at 18 and shove off on your own" is a very, very new concept as far as human history, only really picking up in the post war boom in the 50s. Before that.... having multiple generations in a household was the norm. And when you consider WHY the post war boom happened in the first place, the rest of the first world was in ruin aside from the United States, late teens/early 20s moving out and getting their own places is the exception, not the norm.

It's been said a million times - it's because they want to see their kids succeed.

I live in Toronto where the average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment is over $2000 a month. And guess what? My kids will be kicked to the fucking curb when they're 18 and have to fend for themselves.

I knew a guy here who was living with 6 other roommates and pulled rickshaws downtown just to barely make the month's rent. And guess what? He's growing up and developing life skills while other people are sitting around playing god damn video games.

I don't see how anyone's definition of success can be this:

- No job
- Mom cooks, cleans, does laundry for you
- No car, use your parents
- Can't stay out past 10pm or you'll get in trouble
- Still get an allowance into your late 20s

Unbelievable

I think you're equivocating living with your parents = being a lazy irresponsible slob, which is not necessarily the case. Though I have to say, I see white people who live with their parents past 25 as way more of the type of person you described than minorities like Asians. Perhaps because its sort of expected for you to stay with your parents until you marry in more traditional cultures, so that doesnt give them the excuse of being irresponsible slobs just relying on their parents. In Western culture I suppose its more expected for you to move out earlier, so those that dont are generally prone to being irresponsible anyway.

It was way cheaper after grad school.

My family was self employed and small. There was never a big push to move out. We lived in a home the family built over a hundred years ago.

My nieghbors were my only first cousins. They lived in a family owned homr that was built by my grandparents.

My grand parents lived in houses they built like 15 miles away. My fraternal grandparents had both my fraternal great grandparents living with them.

No idea why so many families push their family out so readily. I will have my parents live with me, ideally, whem they get too old. They funded my lifr and my college, I plan on giving back.

i feel like this too tbh. my brother has been a physician assistant for like 6 years now I think? he's saved up a shit load of money and there's no pressure for him to move out. it's fairly normal for people here who are from the caribbean to pool their wealth together with their family, most of my peers from highschool who are in professional careers seem to be still living at home as well

Essentially that its possible to live with your parents and not be a total lazy irresponsible slob as you described, though the probability of that happening varies by cultural background.
