It forced Japan to surrender. Otherwise the fighting would have continued and even more lives would have been lost.

Japan tried to surrender multiple times before the nukes, with the condition that the Emperor would stay because the Japanese population needed that for stability.
USA needed to show its new superweapon to be sure to stay a superpower, so they hid behind that they demanded an unconditional surrender, dropped two nukes, accepted their surrender and let the Emperor stay.

This is a myth.

Winners writes the history books, and US tried to turn it into a myth.

America wanted to do it especially after the successful tests. They spent alot of money to get it, so they wanted to use it on Germany or Japan. Germany surrendered first so they wanted to use it before the Japanese did as well...and also before the Soviets got majorly involved. If it came down to the Soviets invading Japan from the north and America from the south it'd be another Korea.

All they had to do was surrender unconditionally and this could have been avoided

That's a nice trope but it's actually historians who write the books, historians who have done a lot more research than you've done. There was never any attempt to surrender with that one condition because the supreme council of Japan was divided over additional conditions.

No, we had a new toy and wanted to use it, and japan didn't deserve it.
