When unleaded came out, pumps got converted to 3 grades from two. Two grades of leaded, and the unleaded. When they started to phase out leaded, they dropped premium leaded, and replaced it with premium unleaded. Then they dropped leaded entirely. Since they had 3 grade pumps, and no leaded gas to sell, they had some choices. Since leaded had its own hose (larger diameter spout) some started selling diesel from the pump, especially in more rural areas, where diesel pickups were popular. Others added the blend, because it was easy to do. In either case, marketeers insisted they couldn't have an unused hose..
