Board 8 > Just saw The Predator (spoilers)

Its like Shane Black tried to make the most aggressively mediocre movie ever and failed.

I was impressed for most of the movie, when its completely unlike Predator and is about a government conspiracy and soldiers who escape from a mental hospital bus, even though the movie is kind of bad and dumb. Then in the last twenty minutes the Predator says (using a translation device) Go into the woods and Ill hunt you all and itll be 1% as good as the original, and also there will be an Iron Man suit that lets humans fight predators toe-to-toe.

Only good thing in the movie (by good I mean enjoyably stupid) is when the two gay lover soldiers are both mortally wounded by the Predator, so they shoot each other at the same time as their last act.

But anyways, Its dumb, its stupid, but like, b movie stupid

me and my friends were makin fun of it and having a blast with it

we flinched when there was gore

legit laughed at the dumb jokes

it was a popcorn movie and it succeeded IMO

the problem was the ending

it introduced the iron man predator suit

why?!

Its obviously sequel bait but WHY DO YOU NEED THAT

WHAT ARE YOU ANTICIPATING?!

DID YOU REALLY HAVE THE BALLS TO ASSUME YOU"RE CONTINUING THE STORY?

It did an okay job expanding the Predator universe, but not enough

not enough to sequel hook us WITH A PREDATOR SUIT

Depends on if you see movies in Calabasas, Pun.

But yes, I know the movie is stupid and fun to make fun of, and there are a few good moments (the soldiers killing each other, killing a Predator with his own arm), but it fails compared to the original and even Predator 2.

The problem is that the Predator is more interesting the less you know about him. When he's just a big game hunter, that's great. When he's part of an elaborate mythology that gets explained over time, not great.

When the Predator kills some guys in the back of a truck and the driver asks if everything is okay, so he grabs a guy's arm and uses it to give a thumbs up.

THAT actually annoyed me

This predator was borderline Wacky

and how nonchalant he signaled them to put their guns down when they were at the baseball field

I was chalking it up to human DNA that he supposedly had but they never really explored why he acted that way, and he died not too long after that anyways

it was jarring behavior

They explain that this particular Predator was pro-human. We can reasonably assume that he studied human culture and knew about thumbs up. After I accepted how stupid the movie was going to be, the Predator's silly behavior was easy to accept. If we're going to insist on showing more about Predators than "they're hunters," making one wacky is okay.

That does feel like a natural progression, but I'm glad they didn't do that.

They really should have just stopped making Predator movies after the second or first.

I liked it, Olivia Munn was fun and the weird crew of crazy soldiers actually ended up entertaining (i'll always enjoy keegan)

took too long for significant people to start dying though, my main frustration

plz no anti-predator suit wth... doesn't help that I'm not a fan of the lead dude at all but getting a suit like removes the whole point of the franchise

also a bit weird plotline about aspergers actually being the next evolution of man... although the part where the little kid accidentally murders a teen and potentially his family inside the house was top tier... him being super proficient with any tech, human and alien though... uh yeah what, even just him being some top gov. cyber guy in the ending is insane

I just chalked that up to Predators already having pretty good knowledge of humans, so learning basic communication behaviors would be normal. They even underline how much Predators are aware of Earthlings early on since they're said to be visiting more and more frequently

Didn't think it was a good movie but I really enjoyed the action, the humour, the visuals, and the attempts to expand the Predator mythos. The story and characters were weak though.

The director of Robocop 3 co-wrote this, we know who to blame.

Dwindling the team down to one or two people by the end happens SO MUCH that It would've been new for the main team to make it out. That never happens unless the movie is like, Rated G

The big one called the little one a traitor. I guess that could mean that their factions are equal or something, but given that the little one was trying to give technology to humans, I feel like he was a renegade.

Honestly, I think the owners of Predator, Alien, and Terminator just have no idea what they're doing.

Predator is a fantastic movie. If I was going to rank all sci-fi movies by tiers, I'd probably put it in B-tier or something, not quite on the level of the really good, classic things like ANH or Aliens or Blade Runner, but still very high quality. It clearly blows all of the sequels out of the water. I will admit, though, that the movie would not be what it is without Arnold. If you had just some buff guy, it would still be great, but it wouldn't be a classic like it is.

And I stand by the new Alien and Terminator movies being garbage.

I found it entertaining, if not great. But I wasn't expecting it to be great anyway. Having it be some dumb action was fine.

I'm disappointed Olivia Munn's character didn't die though. I hate her. Why did she have to live and we lose Keegan Michael-Key?

If he's the character I'm thinking of (the insane ex-soldiers kind of blur together), he's a little annoying but not ruinously so. Part of that is that none of the ex-soldiers matter except the main one.

The only character who I really cared about was Olivia Munn's.

The acting was largely as good as it could possibly be though. And I really liked the visuals.

Unfortunately the first shot of the film I think set it off on the wrong foot for me - it seemed more Guardians of the Galaxy than Predator. Then there were at least two facets of the film that brought The Avengers to mind. Note to aspiring filmmakers: don't try to copy the MCU. It never works.

I appreciated the attempts to broaden the Predator mythos, especially in the first half of the film, but then it devolved into a senseless action-fest as it went on unfortunately. And then the action seemed to get worse as the film went on.
