Now, I'm no expert on FF7's story, especially once you get out of FF7 and into the spinoffs.

But with that being said, how much evidence was there of it actually harming the planet in-universe? We know that Meteor, Sephiroth, Jenova etc were very real threats, but Sephiroth (or technically, Jenova) kinda takes over the spotlight before we find any solid conclusions regarding Mako.

The only thing I can think of that hints towards that indeed, it could be harmful, is the relative absence of plant life near some of the reactors, in particular, surrounding Midgar. Gongaga doesn't fit this pattern, it's hard to say whether this can be explained by "it's been ages since that reactor stopped working" alone. Junon isn't too bad either, though maybe the reactor being underwater is the direct reason for that. Wildlife also seems to have no trouble surviving in proximity to at least some of the reactors, which does suggest it's not simply a matter of "toxic fumes being emitted are killing shit nearby". However, there's nothing as such which proves long-term harm rather than just "plant life doesn't thrive in industrialized areas" - and Gongaga may indeed be the proof that there isn't long term harm, just temporary harm while the reactor operates in the area. (Hm, were there any other examples of shut-down reactors? I can only recall reactors in Midgar, Fort Condor, Junon, Mt Corel, Gongaga and Mt Nibel, with Gongaga (due to the meltdown) being the only one that was shut down.)

Discuss.

EDIT: I mean specifically the use of it in reactors / etc, I'm well aware of the harmfulness of direct exposure to it

Mako is literally the life blood of the planet

So yeah...taking it and burning it up was pretty harmful.

It was literally the life force of the planet. It wasn't harmful, but sucking it out of the planet clearly was.

Wasn't this pretty much explained in full during the Cosmo Canyon part?

And also, doesn't the flashback explain the life around reactors are mutants/experiments?

It wasn't Mako that was causing all the death around the planet, it was the fact they were extracting it and burning it.

But even then, they also explain that Mako is inherently poisonous numerous times so like...yeah, burning it up as fuel was probably pretty bad for everything in general.

Honestly, I don't know how you can play FFVII enough to write the OP up and miss these things. It's all pretty clearly laid out.

Only if you assume what was said there to be fact.

That happened when Sephiroth obtained the black materia - and presumably, begun summoning Meteor.

So we're assuming that mako isn't the planet's life force? It was pretty much explained to us what it was.

If we assume mako is something else, it doesn't harm to planet.
