Like you're literally just punching people for an hour straight before you beat the game. I tried Final Fight and Streets of Rage and Turtles in Time and I usually get really bored by the 2nd or 3rd stage >_>

The only 2 beat-em-ups that I actually enjoyed throughout was Scott Pilgrim and River City Ransom >_>

they are boring, very few of them have aged well at all and even those are only fun as a sort of filler game to play with friends while you're having a beer and waiting to do something else

Look up a game called Dungeon Fighters Online. I personally would play that game still if the community was thriving. It's everything you would want in a beat em up game.

looks interesting but i dont like F2P games because the gameplay almost always centers around getting you to spend money. i'd rather just pay a flat rate up front instead of the game constantly begging me to buy cooldowns or revives or w/e

old beat em ups suck, they're pretty much a holdover from the arcade days. gameplay is more or less designed around you tanking damage so you'll lose lives and have to pump in quarters to keep going.

notice how most of the old ones in the SNES era and before have pretty much no ways of dodging, blocking, etc. they're basically that era's equivalent of mobile games begging you to buy premium currency to keep playing

A lot of them have the design focus be forcing you to take hits so you put in more quarters to keep playing over making the combat varied.

The DMC/Bayonetta style games are the modern version of beat em ups, still focused on punching dudes but with more varied combat as the main focus.

The genre lost its appeal after the PS2 era imo. Dynasty Warriors 3 (and 2 to a lesser extent) was amazing at the time because it was pretty much the only game that had a huge open battlefield and dozens of characters to level up.

By the time DW6 came out, the open maps weren't anything special compared to open worlds in games like GTA.

You're right, they're not intrusive tacked on "Diablo style loot" gimmicks for a genre that doesn't need any of that nonsense.

Beat-em-ups are just fighting games with stages.

And, at least for me, some of the bosses they come up with are interesting. Like Damnd, Rolento, Philippe, Martha Splatterhead, just to give some examples.

the genre badly needs that kind of nonsense to stop itself from being repetitive

if you play these old beat em ups the main things they did to keep themselves interesting was change locales so the different levels had very different set pieces

thats pretty lame now that we aren't impressed by sprite scaling and rotation though

LOL

You want lack of repetition but then ask for the most repetitive garbage you could possibly tack on and worse yet, you encourage all sorts of goofy shit like having enemies in a beat 'em up have "levels" you need to grind better gear for like it's some sort of fucking scuffed MMO to actually kill in a comfortable amount of time.

No kiddos, beat 'em ups don't need forcefed RPG mechanics to make them engaging. All you need is great gameplay, great and memorable levels/enemies, great soundtrack and if you want to insert replay value then add in tons of unlockables.

There's a reason why Dragon's Crown came, went, and died while Streets of Rage 2 still reigns supreme. Less is more.

In the arcade era I grew up with Double Dragon, Rampage, Streets of Rage, Contra, etc. everything was pretty much repetition. That's why 4 to 5 subsequent release of Rampage didn't sell. They're outdated. The peak beat em ups can reach has been far surpassed by gaming technology. You'll still get some like Castle Crashers and Blade Kitten, but still remain the same as the old ones, repetitive, but just with a bit better graphics.
