There's an alternate scene. If you successfully keep Cid from dying, Celes never takes the "leap of faith" but instead is shown the raft by Cid. Getting this scene requires that you feed Cid more good fish than bad fish, and that you do it fast enough to overcome the timer that ticks away his health. The best fish move the fastest, thus the comment.

I do believe the scene where Cid dies is the intended course of the story, and I believe it makes for better development of Celes' character.

You get Phoenix from the dungeon where you recruit Locke.

Mostly, yeah. The second half of the game, known as World of Ruin, can be a lengthy affair or very short.

Technically, you can go to the final dungeon as soon as you have access to the airship, but you might have an easier time of that if you collect enough party members to make three parties.

There is some side quest stuff though.

I got Relm and Mog But still trying to find the rest. I think I'm supposed to head to the Veldt.

If you let Shadow die at the Floating Continent, Relm is there instead. The code does not branch to different dialogue for each event, and Woolsey was never told because competent translations didn't exist until the late 90's.

With the benefit of hindsight, I look at the WoR as a sort of prototype open-world game. Which might explain why I always loved it so much; the sudden freedom of going anywhere and no longer being tied to linearity in what was previously a very linear game was mind-blowing. Other FF's have that late-game sidequest hunt, of course, but not nearly to the degree that WoR is.

I was going to do the side stuff but I just don't have the free time to do things like that anymore, so I am just going to go ahead and finish the story. Can't wait to see how it all wraps up.

Yep, I love the freedom to go after the characters in a variety of different orders depending on who you like or value or how the whim takes you. And I also love how a lot of the sidequests are mostly about character development.

With that being said, if I didn't have the internet I never would have figured out how in the hell to recruit shadow. Mostly because I would never have thought to take a random weapon to the Coliseum.

I don't remember where the clues are, but the game definitely drops hints about this. The game's actually very good about dropping hints if you talk to everyone, and talking to everyone was par for the course back when this game was made.

Honestly, FFVI has the best and most satisfying video game ending I've ever seen, by a pretty wide margin. I'm honestly having trouble thinking of any others that even come close. You're in for a treat.

1) After you defeat / gain Tritoch in the Narshe Mountains, a gap opens up in the cliff point. Explore it. Make sure to bring Mog.

2) take the airship to a small triangle-shaped island, which is the northeastern most landmass on the map. Encounter a creature called the Zone Eater. Don't kill or run from him.

P.S. Final Fantasy 6's ending set a standard for video game endings that's personally never been topped, and it'll be incomplete if you don't seek these two out.
