I'm only upset that it was a PS4 exclusive, so I couldn't experience it myself, but i think it was one of the best narrative based games in a long time. I really hope they make a part 2 given how good this game was.

I love it, it's my favorite game I've ever played. I love how bad I felt for Hannah, I like how fleshed out the characters were. It's not perfect, but I'm glad to see SuperMassive Games is making a new game similar to it every year now.

It's okay. Characters are super bland, the character models and animations are heavy on the uncanny valley and the story is kind of all over the place. I think it does the whole "movie game" thing pretty well though. It's not as clunky as most of them seem to be.

I thought it was alright. I didnt really like most of the characters like the glasses guy, and one of the girls. I did think those therapy scenes were cool though

The game is called "Man of Medan" but the series will be called "The Dark Pictures Anthology".

Unfortunately this is still on my backlog. Been there a while so I should make the effort to try it. I guess I haven't been in the mood for that type of game.

Head's up for anyone who enjoyed Until Dawn - the same company is making a similar style game set to come out next year called The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. Some preview gameplay videos just came out in the last week or so.

They also made the "Hidden Agenda" game for the PlayLink (where people play through smart phones).

I think this was basically just an extension of the genre - most slasher films tend to have inherently unlikable characters, to the point where you're usually halfway to rooting for the killer to murder them. Generally, the most likeable character is going to be the one they've set up to survive (who is usually the "final girl" character).

But that was actually the main reason why I never bothered getting the game (and just watched a couple YouTube playthroughs) - the only characters in the entire game that I didn't want to see get murdered was Sam and Josh. So I had zero motivation to play the game and try to keep them all alive.

I think that was the point. They're not supposed to all be likable. Most horror movies have characters written to be assholes or whatever and you sorta root for them to get killed off.

I get what it's supposed to be, the kind of movie style horror where people are intentionally stupid and make completely illogical decisions as part of the "fun" of the story, but I just don't find those kind of stories interesting.

Yesss ! This was exactly my hope, but it seems that they're doing what red dead redemption is doing and making a prequel. I hate when devs become too latched on to one set of characters when they could do an anthology.

true. that said, a game like this doesn't really feel necessary to play to get an enjoyable experience out of it. i suppose that might say something about the genre, but whatever.

I agree. I think it kind of is the genre. It's an interactive story type. I enjoy the mechanics, which I have played games with those kind of controls. And enjoyed the story. It may not be the exact same experience, but it's not that far off. And as long as we can get enjoyment out of it, what does it matter. In the end, I won't let anyone tell me that I can't say I enjoyed a game even though I haven't played it...

Only if you're ignorant. You don't feel as much of the pressure from making a timed decision or the weight of its impact from just watching.

It depends on how into it you get. As I said, I've played similar games. And I've had the same pressure watching them as I did playing it. But I can really get into watching it sometimes.

I disagree, particularly when talking about a game like until dawn. It's like an interactive movie where you make certain choices. It's not like there's anything skill based or super engaging that requires your input to have fun. You are enjoying the visuals, the story, the music, voice acting, and story paths.

Sure, you might not be able to choose the choice you want if you're watching a specific playthrough, but it's not a big deal.

I didn't really watch multiple playthroughs, but does the butterfly effect really lead to lots of significant plot changes? Or does it just affect who dies and who lives?

There are certain main choices that affect stuff like who lives and dies. But some of the smaller choices affect relationships. Which will change what they say at the end and even through the story a bit, I think.

Until Dawn and Bloodborne are the only Sony-published games I've liked this gen (haven't played Spider-Man yet, but I own it).
