The same item, but different packaging.

Either a huge bubble envelope (18 inches by 14 inches roughly) or a box that's about 11.5 x 7 inches x 3.5 inches. The answer is probably obvious but I really just don't know.

The item is cylindrical and about 3 inches in diameter and about 8 inches long, which means it won't fit in the bubble envelope like a book or something would.

it won't fit in the bubble envelope

Answered it yourself.

You forgot the most important thing, however, and that's weight >_>

It weighs about 1/2 a pound. Yeah, I forgot that part.

Not too bad. If it can fit in the envelope, then probably ship it in that. If it'd break in the envelope, then the box.

The biggest factors in shipping are:
1. Weight
2. Distance
3. Speed (if not overnight)
4. Dimensions

So unless you go with a USPS "If it fits, it ships" box (I doubt that's cheaper with something under 14 oz.), a lot of it is predetermined based on the weight, distance, and whether you're shipping it First Class Mail, UPS Ground, etc.

I think you should go with whichever is the safer option for the item's durability.
