Your dream doesn't seem to be "I want to be a comic book artist".

Your dream seems to have some degree of fame and fortune going along with it mixed in there.

You might want to get a better grasp on what your actual dream is.

Why do you say that? Being a comic artist actually involves, you know, recognition and being an established part of the industry. Fortune I couldn't care less about. Fame? Of course. You can only draw for so long before you want some sort of following or pay-off.

There you go. You just clarified what you actually want. You want to be a comic artist that is part of the industry with recognition and some degree of fame.

Recognition and fame are absolutely not a necessary goal for someone pursuing an art.

But there's nothing wrong with wanting it either.

Maybe not, but what are you going to do with your art? Just throw it in a drawer somewhere? Frame it and hang it on your wall where only you and whoever you invite over can see it? Not saying those are bad options, but it's not what I want out of art. I want to be able to pick up a comic and see my name and art in it, or have a YT channel with a decent amount of subscribers, or have my own booth at a comic convention.

Damn straight.

It's just that it's helpful when thinking about aspirations to pin down exactly what you want out of it. Sometimes you might even figure out its the secondary effect you care about more, and can broaden you horizons on ways to achieve it.

I wasn't? Just starting to think of the possibility of being like, 40 and still trying to "make it". Also just been seeing a lot of inspirational stuff about famous comic artists and how they got their success, and how those avenues are mostly closed now. New ones have opened up thanks to social media though, so it isn't completely hopeless.

It's quite simple. Do you feel like 18 is too late? Of course not. If you'd started then you'd have ten years under your belt already.

When you are 38, you'll think back to when you were 28 and say, damn, I could have ten years under my belt.

And then you'll post a topic somewhere asking if 38 is too old to chase your dream.

People are really good at talking themselves out of doing things. So what are you going to do?

Well, for starters, probably close my account here if I ever do start to draw my own original characters. People are cruel and just plain awful here. No quicker way to crush your spirit than posting artwork or writing on gamefaqs.

People make career changes all the time. It's not uncommon. Now, if you're busy trying to pay your bills and raise a family, you're going to have a hard time making a big switch. But you can become competent at just about anything if you apply yourself for 4 years.
