I want to be a comic book artist, but I feel like I'm getting too old to chase this dream tbh. I have some skill, but idk, I feel kind of hopeless when I look at the odds these days.

Art-based ambitions don't have a time limit. You can pretty much get into those at any time

It'd be a different story if it was sport-based

yeah that's kind of sad, imagine if your life long dream is to be a professional athlete and you just end up fucked because you didn't figure it out until you were 30 lol.

He's being sarcastic

CM Punk is a prime example of how sport-based ambitions can have a time limit

Though he's also partly to blame for having a beat up body from pro wrestling for over a decade and just being straight up non-athletic

oh okay lol, i am not too familiar with him.

I know it isn't great, and it's nowhere near my best work, but I'm going to continue to work on a character I designed last year:

https://imgur.com/a/allWWry

Bought a figure drawing book way back and came up with this. Tried to draw panels and somehow it ended up looking more like a Sunday comic strip, so I gave up.

Kind of figured. The comics industry is also super saturated and the big 4 companies (Marvel, DC, Darkhorse, Image) are like trying to get into the NFL.

I do have a small following online. Going to try to be successful at social media though. Like, the only way I see a way into the comics industry is to do freelance stuff. Go to conventions, make a YT channel, go on IG, Twitter, etc. and put stuff out there. A few likes here and there on DA isn't going to cut it.

It will take years of work to get to a professional level, but you just have to stick with it and keep pushing forward. You can begin that journey at any age.

I would doodle a lot as a kid, I never tried for accuracy, did paintings or worked with anything other than pencil passing the time in class. About 4 years ago I got a graphics tablet and stepped into the world of digital painting and it made all the difference. I plan to make it my profession, but it has been, and will continue to be, a long road of dedication and practice.

Believe me when I say the concept of talent is overblown. Resolve and determination to earn your skill is far more important.

True. I mean, talent helps, and it helps me that I've been drawing for 17 years (some of my other, non-original drawings are definitely pro level), but drawing your own creations professionally takes years of work.

I remember watching a documentary on Todd Mcfarlane where he said he used to spend a week or two just drawing hands over and over, then he'd move onto arms, legs, feet, and so on, until he could draw his character perfectly.

I don't know much about comic art but I expect there must be lots of different routes you can explore beyond the obvious. The indie games world, for example, is full of coders that desperately need artists to realise their visions.

I did a lot of research, and it seems like freelance work is the way to go. Trying to get into a big company is near impossible. Marvel and DC don't accept submissions as of 2018. Their guidelines basically say "if we want you, we'll find you".

Create a blog and post content there whilst getting your site linked and featured on more established blogs and comic fan sites. I did this with a short story website I created 5 or 6 years ago and within 18 months I was easily getting 100k hits a month. The more active you are in the community, the more people you will reach and the more you will be approached for collaborations and to provide content for other people's projects, further enabling you to reach a wider audience.

You probably know this already but keep drawing. Make mistakes, learn to draw whats in front of you. On a train? Draw other passengers. Familiarize yourself with the pencil. Its through learning the basic principles that you understand what makes a drawing interesting.

Your dream seems to have some degree of fame and fortune going along with it mixed in there.

You might want to get a better grasp on what your actual dream is.

Why do you say that? Being a comic artist actually involves, you know, recognition and being an established part of the industry. Fortune I couldn't care less about. Fame? Of course. You can only draw for so long before you want some sort of following or pay-off.

There you go. You just clarified what you actually want. You want to be a comic artist that is part of the industry with recognition and some degree of fame.

Recognition and fame are absolutely not a necessary goal for someone pursuing an art.
