In the original Japanese version the badges were all named after colors. Giovanni's Earth Badge is called the Green Badge in Japan (from Viridian City, get it?)
In Gold and Silver the Viridian Gym is now run by the rival from Gen 1. He's named after the "second" version of the original pair of games. In English he's called Blue, but in Japan he's named...
