It's not physics, it's more biology. Rubbing the painful areas can activate 'pleasure' nerves beneath the skin and help relieve the pain.

I think part of it has to do with protecting the wound from something making it worse

Also, for serious wounds, pressure can help prevent them from being fatal... That's pretty questionable given that once I had cut into my thumb enough to see the thin layer of fat inside my hand, and it only started to bleed once I poked the folded skin a little. --- I don't get it either. ... Compression is a sort of pseudo numbing effect. Compress the triggered nerves and their signal gets cut or diminished
