I recently replayed both of them back to back. I was reminded how RE4 is completely unrecognizable as a RE game except for having Leon and Ada in it. It's a good game but it really rustles me how not-RE it is. I'll never understand the "best game ever" people. Then 5 came along and it's pretty much the same game but with slightly better atmosphere at parts and refined gameplay. It's still not a very good RE game but it's a better version of RE4. My only real complaint is Sheva's rage inducing AI.

A lot of people get on RE5 for COMPLETE.GLOBAL.SATURATION. and boulder punching but all of the dialogue in RE4 is god awful and it's got over the top stupid crap like running away from a three story robotic statue of a midget, and just Salazar in general. RE5 starts to lose steam towards the end with the enemies with guns and stuff but RE4 does as well, just to a lesser degree.

in terms of design 5 is basically a retread of a lot of concepts that 4 did only not as well and doesnt throw much of its own into the mix. this is why 4 is still top dog. its a 15-20hour game that throws in a lot of unique sequences and setups and keeps the ball rolling with it till the end. thats practically unheard of in an action game.

5's pacing is also really hit and miss. you dont stay in one spot for too long like 4 does, but 4 still had a sense of progression to the level design. 5 just whisks you away to a new environment during a cutscene at several points. 5 also throws the enemies with guns at you to an obscene level. 4 throw those types of enemies in as well, but in sunstantially limited number and they were better designed with better tells and wind ups to account for the limited controls. 5 gives you a half assed cover system and practically tells you to play it like any other cover shooter without the movement system and polish of that system you need for that sequence to work. and while this is mostly personal i appreciate the more connected story of 5 to the main series, but they play it WAY too straight for what is happening and its even more jarring when the VO is actually pretty good and the cutscenes are well done. 4's was campy and goofy, but that was part of the charm. i felt like i was laughing with it rather than at it like in 5. personal preference though.

5 outside of that unlit tunnel sequence and maybe a 1minute hallway with the lickers never really had much thick atmosphere. 4 had the entirety of chapter 2, the sewers and a lot of moments on the island where they set the action back and let you take in the atmosphere. 5 really didnt do that much at all so even as a "horror" game id still give it to 4. even in the daylight sequences the atmosphere the village section showcased pissed on anything in 5.

5 has imo the best presentation in the series and has a lot of mechanically better designs than 4 and is still a lot of fun especially in coop, but on a whole 4 feels like someones passion project while 5 feels like a calculated execution by suits in a board room (not that thats bad of course).

RE4, 5 and 6 all have their merits. Depending on my mood it's either 4>5>6, 4=5>6 or 5>4>6.

RE5 goes less for horror tropes but has some tense atmosphere regardless. The opening is extremely tense and feels like anything could happen. You also had the lickers and the lake with crocodiles. Neither game is particularly scary but 5 has a unique atmosphere sometimes. 4 just felt like they'd milked the series, were losing sales, and needed to burn everything down to make more people buy in. 5 was extremely safe but built on a few things that 4 started.

all ill say is that i disagree with nearly all of that =D

i think 5 has intense moments, but i dont necessarily equate that to intense atmosphere. the way 4 setup its atmosphere you had more going on in terms of sound effects (or lack there of at the right moments) and appropriately moody music that tried to put you better in the moment. they may be tropes, but they work for what the game was trying to go for. 5 has a few moments that do those as well, but theres not many and they dont last long and when they try some actually ruin the moment (like when you first see the licker in chapter 5-1 beginning, the camera gets taken away from you and loud obnoxious music plays trying to startle you which as generic as it gets). a lot of the enemies (not all) were just kind of thrust upon you in 4 which made their encounters/introductions more startling.

RE6 was just way too inconsistent. They tried to give us a horror campaign, which was just as filled with action as the others and Leon's kung fu moves were absurd. They gave us an action campaign which was actually pretty solid, and they gave us whatever jake's campaign was. They tried to please too many people and didn't focus on one thing. On top of that the story had way too much going on, the gameplay and controls felt off, it was overlong, and those motherfucking QTE's.

Yes, Chris's campaign is by far the worst due to how it just says "fuck you" halfway through and swarms you with enemies with limited ammo.
I actually prefer Jake's campaign to Leon's because it's got a lot less forced walking on repeat playthroughs.

Yeah Jakes was my second favorite. And I liked his character. He wasnt just a carbon copy of daddy. And the gal with him was a pretty good character though Id never played a RE game with her in it before.

I played through the Leon and Chris campaigns in 6. That was enough. No point wasting more time with that game especially since no one says the other two campaigns are the best.

Jake's campaign is my personal favorite and it's definitely worth playing.

chris' campaign in 6 i honestly feel is the only ones thats actually worth playing all the way through. its the most generic, but also the most consistent with what its doing with a decent story. it knows what it is and rolls with it. all the others are a mess of design (not that chris' isnt rough either). Leons especially is easily the worst campaign of the 4. they have some interesting moments, more so than chris, but they also have the lowest points.

and gameplay=/=mechanics. RE6 has some amazing combat mechanics, but the game utilizes them in piss poor ways. while i enjoyed 6 more than most, its a trainwreck of a game. albeit an entertaining one assuming you dont get hung up on every little thing.

I'm a fan of Resident Evil. Just not of Resident Evil 6 after playing 15ish hours of it. Easily the worst RE game since 0.
