Wasn't it always like that? When I was stationed at Ft Drum there were Canadian soldiers training with 10th Mountain and a bunch of them had beards. Maybe they were special forces though.

Special forces have been able to have beards for a long time.

That must have been it, then. I distinctly remember the Canadian soldiers having beards. I didn't interact with them, though. Never got a chance to chat.

I know with the firefighters (and anyone else working in areas with hazardous gas present) the issue was that gas masks don't properly seal over beards. I'm suspecting that this move is a push to encourage growth in the military.
Canada is planning on doubling military expenses in the next few years with a dramatic increase in active duty soldiers. They recently changed fitness standards to a new set that is mostly considered to be easier.
