So. I just got to the portion of the game where you get the Dream Nail.

... wtf is going on? This is very much a Dark Souls style of story telling.

You will find 7 spirits whom you can fight. Defeat them for soul essence. You need soul essence to progress. The seer will give you rewards as you reach checkpoints which he'll make clear for you.

There are also random ghosts you'll see. Swipe them with the Dream Nail and you get some soul essence.

There are also trees that can be activated by the Dream Nail where you can jump and platform around a big room to collect some soul essence. These can get lame.

You only just scratched the surface when it comes to the story.

Also since I went through almost the whole game before realizing this, using the Dream Nail on an enemy will refill your Soul. And of course it will also let you read their thoughts.

Honestly the story didn't start coming together for me until a little after I acquired the dream nail and reached the city.

Also just got the big blast transportation move. On Switch I hold Left Trigger and fly across the screen until I connect with something.

Is there anything else in the Crystal Peak area to do? I only reached the Resting Grounds by falling into a pit that I thought I could traverse with regular dash but could not. So once I got the Dream Nail, I found a way to get back to where I was.

Just beat the game the other day. Great game; I give it 9/10. The power-ups (the main ones needed for progression) could have been a bit more exciting and extensive IMO, but other than that, I can't fault it.

I have one grub left that I couldn't get in The Hive. Also have the Soul Tyrant and final arena challenge left.

Bought Axiom Verge today to continue my Metroidvania fix.

How original can a Metroidvania be? This is very original in terms of story and narrative. Actual gameplay is just solid.

It's definitely Dark Souls-style storytelling, but the lore is shockingly deep and moving/emotional. I'm happy to answer any specific questions, though you may want to see it all yourself and then get clarification. If I were to just type up an answer to "what the fuck is going on," though, it would take me a while lol

I fucking love Hollow Knight. Truly amazing game.

From what I can gather so far, it appears I am a nameless warrior traversing the ruins of an ancient civilization. It appears that there are different groups. Some mined stuff, others just to learn to harness the magic power I use to heal/DBZ blast.

Seems there was a city of Mantis type people, an area where everyone gathered to trade goods, etc. etc.

One group of people seemed to hail the Hollow Knight as their King/God, and another viewed the 3 Lords or something as their God?

That's about what I can figure out thus far. Dunno if I am destined to be the next Hollow Knight or what.

You're on the right track. Without getting too into details at this point, just commenting on what you said:

1) Almost all the species of bug unified under the Pale King (also referred to occasionally as the Wyrm), who gave them free thought and helped stave off the "infection" (the orange eyes are a sign of infection), the source of which is spoilery if you're planning on 100%ing the game. Species that did not fall into line were the mantises, the bees, and the spiders. The bees fucked off and did their own thing, the spiders were openly aggressive, and things were just good enough between the Pale King and the mantises that they worked out a deal where the mantises would help defend against the spiders. There's more nuance to those relationships that you may work out later but I can go into more detail

2) The Hollow Knight isn't the king/god, but a creation of the Pale King which is what you're referring to. The "three" you're referring to also worked for the King and have to do with the Hollow Knight. The Knight and his function are very important, kind of the driving concept of the whole thing

Oh yes.

"The infection" is not really dissimilar to "going hollow" in Dark Souls, but there's a very specific source/cause of the infection.

I really didn't need to farm for geo. Between the harder area enemies giving you plenty and what you get from selling relics, I had more than I could spend.

I farmed to finally get my 6th point of health. Now I'm exploring again. My goodness, the game is HUGE for how much you pay for the game.

Got the second upgrade to my nail. I have the boss in Soul Sanctum to deal with and I opened up the Royal Sewers. God this game is awesome

Yeah, this game is a banger. While I like the music, one thing I also try to to do is play with other songs from other games, and see if they fit. Some songs from Tales of the Abyss are pretty cool in this thingy.

One thing I'm surprised is on how low of a price I got in on the Switch, It was $150 Mexican Pesos, so it is super cheap.

I found that there's a window to heal 2 or 3 bars after the attack where he surrounds himself with souls (I'm guessing that's what the projectiles are). If you stand at the opposite end when he's starting that attack and wait for him to reach the middle of the area, you can jump once (maybe twice, I forget) to avoid it. At that point, you can heal.

I also chipped some health off when he would fly across the room (when not doing the above attack) by jumping and attacking downwards. I'd take other potshots when the opportunity arose.

Since asking I beat the Elegant Key boss so I could get the upgraded soul blast thingy.

Alright, I beat Soul Master! Upgrading my nail to Level 2 was definitely a big deal. I now have Desolate Dive? Looks like I can smash downward. Works for me!

I didn't even know you could get the dream nail without desolate dive, neat!

I ended up putting the game down shortly after Octopath Traveler came out, and now that MHGU is out, that's taking up my game time.

I'd love to come back to it. I got to the rematch with Hornet and it's infuriatingly difficult

speedruns for this are pretty nuts
the most basic trick was the pause menu fast fall, which I dont actually care for since you end up just looking at the menu a lot

certain hitless segments also blow my mind

The main one I remember is in the starting area near where someone is digging in the east. There's also one in the Royal Waterways.
