They keep referencing stuff like the Boss and Peace Walker and I don't really know what's being talked about.

MGS3, Peace Walker, and maybe Portable Ops, but you should definitely play everything from 1 to 4 as well as Peace Walker before playing V.

Just 3 and Peace Walker.

There's a lot of foreshadowing into all of the games (Liquid and Psycho Mantis are from MGS1, an audio tape subplot is setting up for MGS2/4, etc.), but those two should do it.

I mean probably all of them but mgs3 and peace Walker were the best ones imo. 1 is legendary.

But 5 is pretty much it's own thing..I think it might have been a first to the series to many players.

You can just watch it if you need to, but it's far less essential than the others. 4 is the second-to-last game chronologically in the MGS series.

Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Only thing that doesn't REALLY play into it is just Portable Ops and that ending does matter a bit.

I mean you're jumping into one of if not the most story heavy video game franchises ever and even if the story in V is lacking, you've got not chance of following it unless you're caught up.

Eh, I feel like with just main story stuff 3 and PW are enough.

It gives insight into the other games, but I don't necessarily think you need the future games to have a basic understanding of what's going on.

But it may just be how we're both reading "required."

Unfortunately the best way to play the series is the PS3 collection, which includes every game in the series except for Portable Ops. I'll list all the available platforms I'm aware of.

1: PS1, PS3, PSP, Vita
2: PS2, PS3, Vita
3: PS2, PS3, Vita, 3DS
4: PS3
PW: PSP, PS3, Vita
PO: PSP

Metal Gear 1: PS3 or original MSX
Metal Gear 2: PS3 or original MSX
You might be able to play these games in MGS3: Subsistance on PS3 but I don't remember.

I feel like you really need to play Ground Zeroes as well to fully appreciate the characters in Phantom Pain because I didn't and it never made an impact to me.

There is a definitive edition for PS4 that has GZ and PP, the earlier games, you need a PS3 for those.

Don't even bother playing the others because the story makes less sense if you have knowledge of the other games

Ground Zeroes

Ah, I forgot about this one.

GZ is available on all platforms PP is on.

Honestly, as somebody who has played all the games, MGSV's story isn't all that important. Playing the other games in the series will only make that more evident.

I'd just enjoy the gameplay.

They are ALL on PS3 in the Legacy collection unfortunately. If you are serious that is the best way to do it.

Otherwise you can just watch "movies" of the games that include all cutscenes and important gameplay online. That's still a lot of hours of work.

How interested are you in the series? If you just want to play V I could catch you up to speed fast enough. I always suggest actually experiencing the games yourself (the story in all of the main numbered ones is far better than what V has to offer), but it's a tall order so I can get it.

Or if you just have specific questions about certain topics being referenced you can ask me. I'm a huge fan and actually enjoy helping people out with the series.

Oh and 100% play Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. The main line for Big Boss goes MGS3 into Portable Ops (optional) into Peace Walker into Ground Zeroes and then Phantom Pain. But Ground Zeroes is freaking great , takes about 2 hours to complete and I honestly liked it more than anything in Phantom Pain

i'm semi-interested. I've played Ground Zeroes, and i got to Africa in TPP, but i feel like i'm missing a bunch of stuff.

I'd suggest finishing all the materials (tapes, logs etc)

PS3 is HD? Unless you mean you only have monitor then look for vga/dvi/whatever port to HDMI.

At the bare minimum as what others said you need MGS3 and PW.

i have an HDMI-DVI port already because i'm using a pair of shitty old LG Flatrons that max out at 1280x1024

You're a good chunk into the story and honestly (sadly) the second half of the game doesn't have a whole lot of story left. You won't get almost any of it beyond Big Boss verses Skull Face, but at the same time there's only a few parts that are actually good and connected to past games.

None of them since MGSV is overall meaningless to the overall story.

Big Boss's real ending was Peace Walker

Maybe he's on that 4K.

A little heads up: the Legacy collection has MGS1 as a download code, so buy it new. According to Amazon reviews, download codes were working as late as May of this year, and looking at my voucher there is no marked expiration date so it'll probably be fine.

Well if you get a PS3 there's a lot of good shit to get into depending on your tastes. I'd say it's worth it.

And the Legacy Collection has every single game in the series other than Portable Ops (a PSP game) and Rising (a game that takes place in the future after 4 and is really not connected to anything in the main story).

Portable Ops is also pretty bad.

Rising, on the other hand, is pretty rad, but I personally consider it non canon (not that that matters. I wouldn't be upset if in an alternate timeline Kojima made an MGS6 and made it canon).

Portable Ops is a LOT better with two sticks to work with. Played it on an emulator with a PS3 controller years ago and then on the Vita and it was much better than on PSP. I always liked the story and a lot of the characters introduced in it.

And yeah Rising's pretty damn good for a character action game. It's full on camp which is saying something for MGS, but as mentioned it's in the future and doesn't really matter story wise.
