I'm sure you know the game For Honor, an epic 3 way conflict between histories most famous warriors: Knights, Vikings, and Samurai. Complete fiction, meant to be epic and grandiose, pure fantasy....

But what if I told you that, despite not ever encountering one another, they did actually exist simultaneously?

Now you might be saying "but knights are medieval and samurai were still here in the 1800s"....you're right, but the length of time the samurai existed is the tie that bonds this scenario to the realm of historic possibility, despite its modern fictional state.

You see, samurai came into play around 645AD, as an authority over civilian affairs. Cops. They wouldn't become our idea of samurai (elite soldiers loyal to the emperor) until later. Of the 3 they were first, and the last

Now vikings...Scandinavian warriors, traveling and pillaging, axes and horns....came into play around the mid 600s and lasted until the late 900s-early 1000s. Not all Scandinavians were vikings. Not all soldiers or warriors were vikings. Vikings were the wandering soldiers. Overpopulation led to food shortages so those that went to pillage were vikings.

Here's the kicker....the first knights....were 3-5 generations descended from vikings. Though unassociated, they were related. Vikings settled, had families, and those families became knights. Now....these aren't your fantasy, full armor knights we imagine. That wasn't until the 13-1400s. Orifinally, documented 911AD, a knight was just a well equipped warrior on horseback. Helmet, chainmail, basic stuff

Now clearly the samurai were geographically far removed, and vikings likely weren't pillaging very much anymore, and likely not near ye olde England or wherever...but the moral of the story is:

Knights, Vikings, and samurai all existed together, during different points in their historical development, for a solid 100 years

So For Honor isn't as silly and fantastical as it seems, it COULD have happened....it just didnt
