Because you can switch between a stationary mode for TV's and a portable mode for on-the-go use. Likewise you can switch between three different control styles.

The casual consumers(which was a large % of people who bought the original wii) thought the Wii U was an upgraded wii or an expansion to the wii. In addition the amount of shovelware crap on the Wii tarnished the brand name for people who don't look up games.
This (and the lack of a must-have) is the reason no one bought a wii-u. Which is why they dropped the name. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
