1970. Only 12 participants? It's the end times of the ESC! Yeah, right.

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating to express my overall appreciation of the song.

12
[12th/12]
David Alexandre Winter Je suis tomb du ciel
[Luxemburg]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-nTwltlavQ" data-time="

David can sing, like a French Tom Jones, but unfortunately, his song doesn't quite live up to its promising start. One expects this to be develop into an exciting uptempo entry, but turns it's a slow and joyless waltz.
2/5

11
[8th/12]
Jean Valle Viens l'oublier
[Belgium]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uK41BM4c44" data-time="

Jean has a warm yet powerful voice, which makes it so much more dismaying that his song is a shallow and generic 40-second loop tripled in duration. This isn't any better than Luxemburg's forgettable snoozer, but both can't share the bottom spot.
2/5

10
[8th/12]
Gianni Morandi Occhi di ragazza
[Italy]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNVdo_vWdjw" data-time="

Gianni's odd and slightly fluctuating tone suggests that something very amusing popped into his mind right before the song started and struggles to contain his laughter. That aside, this song is rather unremarkable, but for not being awful, I can justify the single point it gets for tenth place in a roster of twelve.

[8th/12]
Dominique Dussault Marlne
[Monaco]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUfQ6k6KP_E" data-time="

I must commend the genre chosen; it's like vaudeville from the 1920's with a spot of contemporary modernism. The language switch works within the context of the song as well. I would like to say this is an enjoyable entry, and to a great extent it is, but the ending leaves a lot to be desired. It throws its orchestra into mild overdrive before coming to a sudden halt, and the recorded version fades out like it were a demo clip of the full song. So, despite everything, this fascinating and unique entry ends up being a small disappontment.

Hearts of Soul Waterman
[Netherlands]

Picture this: a sunny meadow, with hippies dressed in colorful garments, lounging and playing without a worry in the world. Now picture that in slow motion, with the occasional closeup of their carefree and happy faces. Maybe they'll be blowing soap bubbles? Well, this song is the soundtrack.

Eva Sren Pridi, dala ti bom cvet

[Yugoslavia]
The Balkan version of Ireland's entry. Or the other way around. Cute, mellow, delicate, and charming.

Dana All Kinds of Everything
[Ireland]

Comparale to its Balkan sibling, but overall feels more thought-out and nuanced in its arrangement.

[2nd/12]
Mary Hopkin Knock, Knock Who's There?
[United Kingdom]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kvo8pzEyxF4" data-time="

Very lovable, but not overly sweet. I'm glad that the UK decided to break from the manufactured fluff with a song that seems more genuine.

[4th/12]
Julio Iglesias Gwendolyne
[Spain]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlqiv5q2lgE" data-time="

I've heard this guy's name before. Is he famous or something? Be as it may, I like his ESC venture. It's a passionate yet sensual song that's almost touching at times.

Katja Ebstein Wunder gibt es immer wieder
[Germany]

A great voice that's neither flat or shouty, though it's a tad piercing at times. Powerful but not overpowering refrains contrast neatly with the calmer verses. Fairly impressive song, both in concept and execution.

Guy Bonnet Marie-Blanche

I'll keep this short: mournfully melancholic, impressively minimalistic, yet stunningly beautiful, and a must listen.

For all the flak I hurl at childish, cloyingly cheerful songs, I should probably not be kind to this one. However, to create a bubbly song fit for a children's TV show that's not sweeter than a barrel of syrup and then have it performed perfectly is an extraordinary rare feat. But just like total sun eclipses, eventually one will occur, even if it they might be decades apart. If I listen to this song and am not immediately elated and dancing to its beat, then I've given up on living. This is, no kidding, one of my favorite ESC songs of all time, and I'd give it 24 points if I could!

1967 had a ton of good songs. It should've been Vicky's first win but she got fourth.

I'm ready for you to do 1972. That year has my favorite winning song for the entire contest.

@SaithSayer
To be honest, I like her fourth placer more. On that note, it's a bit surprising to myself how often I don't place the winning song in the top spot. I'm sure I'll ruffle a few feathers with that, especially once we reach the years that produced some of the most recognized winners.

Considering how many countries compete, it's a bit nuts to really expect your favorite to win. I just pick the top handful I like the best and hope they get closer to the top than the bottom.
