This is by far the most obnoxious thing that any of the big three modern gaming companies do. Nintendo should be castigated for this and their atrocious online but they kind of get a free pass because... well, I'm not really sure why.

I mean haven't Sony and Microsoft released "updated" versions of the PS4 and Xbone this generation too

Sony and Microsoft have been releasing new versions of their systems for awhile yet people only complain about Nintendo doing it

Sony has done it for at the very least all four of their consoles (PSOne, PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim, PS4 Pro) and they did this to their handhelds too didn't they?

I think Nintendo gets a bad rap for it because they really ran new (New!) 3DS models into the ground. 2 years feels like a pretty quick turnaround for a new Switch, but the PS4 to Pro was 3 years so it's not that far off.

Pretty obvious this would be a thing eventually, Switch is a great success but PS5/XboxToo gotta be coming some day and Nintendo will have to gear up as well. We'll see what it's like before I judge needing the upgrade this soon though.

then again I might just go for it and give my current to my sister or something

although the 1st new switch model could just be like an alt variation and not a full 2nd generation Switch yet -- like a Switch Mini instead of a 3DS XL. The article does talk of just keeping Switch sales momentum after all

This new version likely would have happened eventually anyway, but the original model switch can literally be hacked with a paperclip. They needed to change hardware to prevent that. This was expected

Thing I'm wondering is if there's going to be any major improvements to the hardware like the New 3DS. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't like that, but if it made the switch get more games that it wouldn't originally be able to run I think that would be great.

This would be a spit in the face to day 1 buyers though. On the 3DS the exclusive content was like, 3 Wii/Switch ports and the SNES VC. If their primary console is going to start getting games that people who bought the system early cant play without re-shelling out $300, that would take away all incentive to buy consoles at launch.

Yeah I think a Switch Lite might be more likely than a Switch Pro.

I don't think a Switch Lite will happen with how they've been pushing motion controls again and even releasing first party games that can't be played in handheld mode

Switch Lite wouldn't prevent those games, additional controllers would still presumably sync up.
