...in the heat of the moment, or perhapse even on accident, and having to live with it.

Let's face it, we're human and are accident prone. Or not even accident. Maybe you said or did something on purpose, that's normally out of character. You gave in to human pride and your ego, or just sheer anger, and you did something bad. The world would probably judge you a piece of shit, worthless scum sucker. Depending on the degree of your infraction (you killed someone), they might be right.

Being the non-sociopath you are, you get to live with not only the judgement of others, but your own as well.

Why did I do that?

How could I be so careless?

I thought I had better self control?

My nephew was in a traffic accident about 3 years ago. He was driving home after a long shift, and dozed off at the wheel (come on, most of us have done that), but he just happened to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. A kid was coming around the corner, speeding on a motorcycle, and my nephew hit the kid. Killed the kid on impact. The kid was 17.

Investigation was done, and the incedent was deemed accident. Forensics determined that the motorcycle was speeding and veered into the oncoming lane. However, it was also suggested that the accident could of been avoided if my nephew hadn't been sleep deprived. No charges were filled. Local social media crusified my nephew.

Due to overwhelming guilt, my nephew turned to hard drugs and fucked his life. His wife left him and he lost his kid in custody. He's trying to get back on track, but still carries the guilt. He said that he would always carry it.

I truly believe that his self harm is a form of penance. Since law and society won't punish him formally, because it was technically an accident, he just does it himself. Sounds counterintuitive, but guilt can skullfuck your brain.
