Your thoughts on it.

I just tried the S9. Opened the camera and tried to back out of it. Didn't work. Even trying to press the home button took some time.

On my S6 with a physical button, it backs out instantly.

Thought I was going to hate it. Took me about a week to get used to it. Now i don't mind and the extra screen real-estate is nice.

Might have just been the demo model, but I've got a Note 9 and there's no delay or issue with that. I just tap the screen (or swipe up to bring up the home bar) and tap and it happens instantly.

Touch interfaces are godawful in general because tapping, double tapping, holding briefly, or dragging a bit usually have catastrophically different functions and it messes you up if your finger twitches

That's how I feel but maybe I am old fashioned.

I've had more issues with touch interfaces not registering my touch over the past decade, not only with smartphones but with any device, than with physical buttons.

If it's not on, turn on the touch buzz feature. It provides a small amount of haptic feedback and actually really improves the feel of using a touch interface.

I have to say I don't like most of the new smartphone trends.

Notches? Get fucked. (Popup frontcam is acceptable but I prefer the classic style. I could maybe even tolerate a notch in a corner, but fuck everyone who keeps putting it dead center.)
18:9? Fuck no, if anything, they need to be wider, not taller.
Ridiculously large? 5.5" was the sweet spot, beyond that is just getting ridiculous.
And yeah, lack of physical buttons can be added to that list. At the very least, there should be a physical home, back and power button. (I do like the way Meizu phones handle this - Home and Back are the same button, tap it for back, press it for Home, you can also hold it to lock the phone.)

Prefer it without physical buttons (other than power and volume)

It doesn't bother me to not have a physical home button. To be honest, I'd miss the finger scanner more at this point considering how much I use it for Samsung Pay.

I have a physical power/activate/de-activate button and volume. Most of my interface is touch-screen.

I have rather thick thumbs too, and while I do have some issues with typing sometimes, typically I don't mess anything up.

That said I am gonna be trying PUBG on my phone soon...
