In an interview with Empire magazine (Via The Huffington Post), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald director David Yates confirmed that Albus Dumbledore will be gay in the prequel films. He previously said that the younger version of the character, played by Jude Law, would not be explicitly gay in the film.

He said: In that earlier interview, I didnt say Dumbledores not gay. He is. This part of this huge narrative that [J.K. Rowling] is creating doesnt focus on his sexuality, but were not airbrushing or hiding it. The story [of the romantic relationship] isnt there in this particular movie, but its clear in what you see that he is gay. A couple of scenes we shot are very sensual moments of him and the young Grindelwald.

Author J.K. Rowling declared that Dumbledore was gay in 2007, and said that he fell in love with Grindelwald (played by Johnny Depp in the new movie) during his teenage years. The film will be released on November 16.

Yes, they do. That's why there are always tons of discussions about it.

On topic, this is great news.

I thought the main thing people are upset about with this movie is Nagini being part human. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, but I do think that's pretty stupid.

I'm 100% here for it. And I believe everyone with the proper context would feel the same.

1. There's not a lot of queer rep in media, and when it does show up it's largely 'by the culture for the culture,' which means low production values, short runs, little advertising, little critical engagement, etc. And then if it ever gets popular, it immediately gets appropriated by straight white girls ('YAAAS Queen,' RIP RPDR)

2. When you do see it, ageism, and the cult of masculinity often show up in these shows. Just as Hollywood has an age bias towards 'hot and young' acting talent, ditto. Frankly, a lot of A-list gay men celebs and tastemakers take Hollywood's fixations of age and sexual capital and ramp it up to eleven. It's how thirst-trap instagram happened with the girls posting candid photos of his ass with a caption talking about how pretty his hair looks or his new contacts or whatever, when the purpose of the photo is clearly to get those thirst likes and boost that social/sexual capital.

Considering this, taking a moment to acknowledge someone so central to the world might actually be gay, having the fallout of a gay tragic romance govern basically 75% of his adult life and continue to influence his decisions into his December years, and literally just acknowledging the sexual agency of older people in general (whom Hollywood essentially renders into sexual eunuchs after the age of sixty, if you're a man, or forty, if you're a woman) is potentially earthshaking for the medium. It seldom happens, and when anything like this is even hinted it at, it only applies to a forgettable supporting cast member. For the past decade, Dumbledore has probably been the most recognizable character in this intersection in all of fiction. Period.

Literally all of recorded surviving fiction, reaching back to Epic of Gilgamesh.

So there's a lot hanging on this, and there's a lot of room to disappoint people.

Doesn't bother me. I think it'll be great once we reach the point that shit like this doesn't even need a mention. It's just there, and that's that.

Personally, I don't have any interest in gay romance and would probably skip out on media that focuses on it primarly. If you're not interested in something, you're just not interested.
Even heavy straight romance I look at it as filler. I'm, like, where's the action scenes? Where's the cool fight scene at?

That's exactly how I feel

It's not special, it should be just, "oh, okay."

Not for nothing, but the Grindlewald vs Dumbledore fight that ended the reign of terror in 1945 was apparently the most spectacular wizard duel of the twentieth century. It was so high profile and so memorable that it almost launched Dumbledore into the position of Minister of Magic, the highest post in wizard government, and a post British wizards would try to push him into for the next forty years.

It's made all the more emotionally fraught by the fact that they used to be lovers and that this fight is the long awaited fallout of a legendarily bad breakup that happened like fifty years ago.
