Venom was only tracking at 55-60M and many pundits predicted the movie would tank given the critics thrashing the movie and an R rating dogged down to a PG-13 but fans seemed to have enjoyed the movie and gave it a B+ cinemascore and a high audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was going to open at 150M global opening and now it will higher given the positive fan reaction...

Sony was really banking on creating its own universe as it is the only studio that owns a marvel character and not by Disney.

It made 32.5M friday for a 77-80M record opening besting Gravity which made 55M in October....

A Star Is Born is also higher at 15-16M today for a 45M weekend which got an A cinemascore and is going to be a huge Oscar Push for Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga

Does this surprise you?

Well.....to be fair....movies like A Star Is Born are usually only watched by a smaller percentage of people.

Chicks who drag their boyfriends to go see it. Music majors. Older folk who can't keep up with high action movies because it hurts their eyes and brain.

Not a lot of women would go and see a movie like A Star Is Born by themselves.

But there are a LOT of guys who would gladly go see Venom by themselves, or as a large group of friends.

Superhero movies are the bread and butter nowadays. Even if they suck, they are funny for sucking. And if they're great....they're great.

So no. It doesn't surprise me one bit.

Yeah, that was my prediction.

Just like many other godawful action movies of the past, it would bomb in the US but make crazy amounts of money in China.

Considering the travesty that was Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man 3, it doesn't surprise me at all that this movie is getting a better reaction.

Couldn't agree more.

They took such a massive shit on Venom in Spider-Man 3. It was extremely offensive. He's such a cool character, and they made him into such an afterthought for the movie. And Topher Grace is about as much Eddie Brock as Oprah Winfrey is Black Widow. Just a terrible decision.

Just from the trailers alone, even if Tom Hardy's Venom has a cheesy story and cringe-worthy writing.....at least the character LOOKS and SOUNDS the part for the first time in cinematic history. Took them long enough.

To this day, if Spider-Man 3 is on the TV, my wife will change the channel because she knows that if I see Topher Grace, I'll go on a rant about what a horrible casting choice it was.

Box office is really a poor metric for comparison in this instance. Venom is available in premium priced formats (3D, IMAX) whereas A Star is Born is not. How about just telling us how many tickets each movie sold?

Just because a lot of people go to see it doesn't mean it's good.
