Current Events > A plot trope that seems to never get old in RPG games

You go to investigate what happened to some mad scientist in an abandoned laboratory under some mountain or in a temple/cave/fort and piece together the last days of his life by reading diary entries that grow increasingly more crazy. They start like this:

Day 1
The blasted academy kicked me out, something about "dangerous and fruitless nonsense". Those gutless imbeciles wouldn't know science if it smacked them across the face with an alchemy kit! Where will I get my funding now? If my darling Agatha discovers I'm penniless she's sure to leave me. All is lost...

Day 2:
Luck strikes! A merchant from out of town happened into the tavern when I was drowning my sorrows. He wants me to continue my research at a secret location. Agatha will be thrilled!

*etc*

Last entry:
My darling, what have I become...

At the end of the dungeon you'll face the results of his research or the scientist himself who's turned into a hideous monster mutation because he was getting impatient with the lack of results and decided to hurry up the research

I swear this forms the basis of so many exploring quests but it's always fun
