1971. Things are back to normal, with the usual lineupalong with the introduction of a newcomer!

Without further ado, here are my brief opinions on the songs. I'll use the current-day score system of 1-8 and 10 and 12, but also a separate 1-5 rating to express my overall appreciation of the song.

18
[5th/18]
Massimo Ranieri - L'amore un attimo
[Italy]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNCjU7y-yxc" data-time="

Massimo has a strong voice, maybe a little too strong occasionally, in this distinctly Italian-tinged song that doesn't enthuse me one bit. It's just meh.
2/5

17
[8th/18]
Markku Aro & Koivistolaiset Tie uuteen pivn
[Finland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_11CcVeSH0" data-time="

Markku's voice is wonderfully melliffluous, befitting a tender and sensitive ballad. However, this is not a ballad, but a cheerful pop song that's technically flawless in perfomance and arrangement. Alas, it's a meaningless accolade when the composition is a weak and unimpressive by-the-numbers product.

[12th/18]
Peter, Sue & Marc Les illusions de nos vingt ans
[Switzerland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kJPdJuYPzI" data-time="

I wonder if this trio were inspired by a 1960's folk song group of a similar name? Their style is comparable at least. Be as it may, their song, while harmonious and serene, is simply boring.
2/5

15
[2nd/18]
Karina En un mundo nuevo
[Spain]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSFnywlU54w" data-time="

Karina's voice and range is impressive, both the composition and its arrangement shows promise, and the song doeesn't rpeat itself. This entry could be a strong conender, but, err...the finale blows it all out with an absurdly overhwleming and confounding marching band-esque wall-of-sound disaster.
2/5

14
[18th/18]
Joe Grech Marija l-Maltija
[Malta]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyCkJkD9InQ" data-time="

Malta's debut song is like a carefree tune meant to set the scene for a tropical resort from the first half of the 1950's, but Joe performs it with a voice that's all over the place and a demeanor of someone performing karaoke after being liquered up. I could say this song is mediocre, but that implies dissatisfaction, or even contempt, neither of which I feel. I suppose it's a comically awful entry.
2/5

13
[16th/18]
Marianne Mendt Musik
[Austria]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKzXt6841FU" data-time="

I'm not taken by that dramatic intro crescendo. Regardless, it leads into a surprisingly serious pop song. I enjoy the low, brooding vocals, but cannot bear her shrill shouting. This has song has almost an equal measure of good and bad, I would say.
3/5

12
[3rd/18]
Katja Ebstein Diese Welt
[Germany]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th6zwQohqoA" data-time="

Katja's second appearance on the ESC, but less impressive, most notably in regards of the refrains. "Wunder gibt es immer wieder" had a better flow to it than the halting "Diese Welt, Diese Welt". But it's not a terrible song, only a bit of a letdown to her first.
3/5

11
[11th/18]
Angela Farrel One Day Love
[Ireland]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z2gCmhpdzM" data-time="

Now that's a beautiful voice, and it's employed finely in this gentle but bitterly lachrymose song. Suffers from monotony, however.

Hanne Krogh Lykken er
[Norway]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tELNBuDYcN8" data-time="

This is has such a cute and cheerful melody and ambiance, that it's hard not to like it. The ending gimmicks, however clever and adorable they were in concept, aren't executed well on stage, and persist as inexplicable moments of silence in the record version as well. Tsk tsk. Could've been a four out of five otherwise.

[4th/18]
Clodagh Rodgers Jack in the Box
[United Kingdom]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tYrXVIS60A" data-time="

What kind of a name is Clodagh? Anyhow, I like the beat and those booming drums, not to mmention the catchy melody. Then the song gives itself a blemish with a vacuous "speedbump" and lalalas, meaning that this doesn't quite make it as high on my list as it could have.

[9th/18]
Tonicha Menina do alto da serra
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMPF88rtrbk" data-time="

[Portugal]
A composition that doesn't ask the singer to belt their lyrics, some ingenious instruments used judiciously for great effect, and a strong melody to structure it on. Pretty impressive. I'm not quite taken by Tonicha's voice, however.

[13th/18]
Monique Melsen - Pomme, pomme, pomme
[Luxemburg]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOzHRKWz3WE" data-time="

This is the oddball of the year, an entry that come closest to defiying convention, a song that's innocently childlike and bouncy in its sound. The arrangement is rather minimal, and though the song is repetitive, its quirky character maintains my fascination.

6
[14th/18]
Lily Castel & Jacques Raymond - Goeiemorgen, morgen
[Belgium]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0LC3jOhJoc" data-time="

A cozy, inoffensive, feel-good duet where the voices of the two exude the affectionate softness of two genuinely enamored people, and it's this charming performance that thankfully outshines the otherwise average composition.

[14th/18]
Krunoslav Slabinac - Tvoj djeak je tuan
[Yugoslavia]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX-LJdpxxbM" data-time="

It's a Balkan Tom Jones with a ballad that's as heavy as it's bleak, a theme that's not lightened by a name that translates to "Your boy is sad. A very strong performance, and a memorable song as well. Stylistically, I'm reminded of Czesaw Niemen's Dziwny jest ten wiat.

[10th/18]
Serge Lama Un jardin sur la terre
[France]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVI4hgFBfhw" data-time="

This is one of those songs that I didn't care about at first, but to which I've warmed up to with subsequent listens. This feels less like a song, actually, and more like an anthem, and while Serge does occasionally raise his voice, there's still some kind of an odd sense of understatement to it.

3
[6th/18]
Family Four Vita vidder
[Sweden]
This is a very 5th Dimension-like love letter to the winter, with impressive (and amusingly enough) warm harmonies. I especially enjoy the calm and relaxing verses, though the exuberant refrains aren't bad either.
4/5 (8 pts)

2
[6th/18]
Saskia & Serge Tijd
[Netherlands]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gZFDQUtpj4" data-time="

This is what Netherland's 1969 Der Troubadur would be if it was reworked into a tender duet. Soothing, moving, gorgeous yet humble, but also just a tiny bit wistful.

Sverine Un banc, un arbre, une rue
[Monaco]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oGow6SKPbc" data-time="

I remembered not liking this much for it being shouty. I must've been terribly mistaken, because while Sverine does put a lot of power into her voice, it never feels forced or too intense. Also, the harmonies are fantastic and synergize perfectly with the instruments to produce an enchanting and sincere song.
