Black Friday that year was one of the worst days of my life. The whole store's system broke down. I don't remember exactly what that entailed, but we basically had to look up the prices of everyone's stuff online and write the totals down to try and keep the lines moving.

And then I got fired the day before Christmas because I got sick and had to miss truck unload days two weeks in a row. Like I was REALLY sick, to the point that I was in constant pain on some days while I was there.

Bound to happen eventually. My closest mall had a Sears that closed and now is a JCPenny.

Old school Amazon finally got done in by Amazon.

If Sears execs had adapted to the modern age early on, there might not have been an Amazon today.

Well there was a day we had to evacuate the store because someone smelled gas (ultimately nothing bad happened, so don't worry). One of the employees didn't come out right away because he was busy eating in the one room in the building with no loudspeaker. Apparently the fire department couldn't check on the stuff they needed to at first because someone misplaced the key to the gated area outside. So the boss chewed me and that first guy out even though we had nothing to do with it. We just happened to be going the same direction once we got the all-clear to go back inside.

I remember the electronics department being laughably outdated for as long as I could remember, but it was a good place to find certain things that had fallen off the market. I got Brutal Legend for like $5 and a copy of the Super Mario World cartoon that I didn't even know existed in physical form.

Every time I pass by Wal-Mart I think about picking something up and then realize that would invovlve having to deal with their 2 open of 70 total checkout lanes.

Oh my god your walmart does that as well? Why do they do that?

Walmart is notorious for being understaffed. Good luck if Walmart is the only store in town and you need paint mixed up, or an item that's locked, or a firearm purchase, or fabric cut or etc.

Yep. They intentionally understaff and overwork their existing associates, making one person be responsible for multiple departments.

anyone else surprised that Best Buy is still in business?

Yes. It's always quiet there here.

Best Buy is the only major store that focuses on big ticket appliances/electronics and most people prefer to go in and take a look at things like that vs buying them online or at a specialty shop so it makes sense why they are still somewhat successful. They recently did stop selling music though.

Spotify etc have basically killed music sales. Even MP3 sales are on a huge decline.

Ironically Vinyl sales are up.

Best Buy is still in business because they invest in training. The thing Best Buy has over competition is their sales team. All employees are required to go to vender shows and do a constant stream of learnings narrated by various vendors like intel and popular you tubers (Linuss group from linustechtips being in a lot of them) as well as a price match guarantee so the store can give something to the customer an online storefront like amazon cannot.

I work on commission out of Best Buys magnolia Design center which sells luxury audio/video products. I went to corporate headquarters for a month (200 or so hours) of training and vender shows before I was in the store.

I feel bad for the founders of Sears and Toys R Us as I'm sure they were passionate about their companies, but to see them get buried by greedy CEOs must have them rolling in their graves.

Pretty sure I read they're bringing Toys R Us back, or they will at least attempt to.

Sears is almost certain to also return in some form, possibly as a shitty Fingerhut clone just like Wards.

America always a step behind, our Sears locations closed almost a year ago.

Of course we still have Toys R Us though.

Sears went belly up in canada last year and it sucked.

The sears catalogue used to be the best obscure way to get a hot game around Christmas time. I remember when gta3 came out it was sold out everywhere.... except sears.

Best buy has been smart about things.

A) their online store, while nowhere near Amazon level, is actually only second to Amazon in terms of online general tech purchases in the USA.
B) they ditched pointless space occupying sections like cds and stuff, putting a larger focus on tvs, phones, computers, videogames, and appliances.
C) they closed their lowest performing stores to conserve money.

Best buy saw what was coming with Amazon and restructured.

I miss the Canadian Sears. We bought some home stuff there, like the necessary snowblower for our average massive dumps of snow, on some good deals.

Also the late 80s/early 90s childhood nostalgia of that fucking amazing Wishbook.

The wishbook was the shit. We used to fight over who got to read it first and write down what they wanted.
