Here is the thing: We literally found out about the layoffs TODAY, and only though the office rumor mill. It hasn't even been made public yet, and some of the people getting laid off don't even know when their last day is. I am not impacted by the layoffs (thankfully) so I probably won't apply to the jobs offered, but I am surprised how quickly they found out about it. One of them has e-mailed pretty much everyone on my team seeing if they are interested in interviewing.

The sharks descend on the chum fast, LOL!

thats one way to look at it, another way is that they might have known about the layoffs before the employees even knew

Almost guaranteed. Likely they were tipped off by those in management who wanted to help soften the blow when they made the announcement.

Feels a lot less bad when you get the layoff notice if you simultaneously get a chance to get picked up by another company.

It is very likely. I mean, recruiters have been poaching talent from the company for the last year at least. The project I am on has had 4 people lifted from it in the last 6 months, that doesn't even include the dozen or so people who have left from other groups.

I think what pisses me off more then anything (and makes me want to leave despite having 11 years under my belt here) is that the company is not only letting people leave without replacing them, but pretty much don't care to try and keep the people they do have. I mean more and more tech companies from other cities are coming to my area and offering nice deals to come over and the best our VP can manage is a "well, sometimes a good offer is too good to be true..." Freaking really? THAT is your attempt at trying to keep people?
