how much do they know and do they understand or roll their eyes

my girlfriend knows i do this but the details are very vague for her, she knows I was rallying for Metal Sonic and that I was very happy he got in

my friends kind of know but don't care much to learn, I think they think it's lame

Not really. I recently mentioned the CBX to my younger sibling who also GAMEZ, but doesn't have any interest in making a bracket. During one of the 2003 or 2004 contests I think I unsuccessfully tried to encourage them to make a bracket but it's fairly pointless for anyone who doesn't care to learn the site trends. I also posted a link to the CBX page on my FB with no context, but the only way anyone I know might care is if I were to win a prize.

A long time ago, me and a good friend followed the contests pretty closely.

I did tell him about this one, but I don't think he filled out a bracket since he hasn't logged in, in 3 years.

I actually remembered in high school that me and a few other friends followed the L-Block run.

Actually, yes. I occasionally mentioned it to my parents in high school, but haven't mentioned a contest to them in a long time. My best friend from college and current significant other both know I follow these contests and don't think negatively of it.
