I've always had my eye on what appears to be an accessible Dwarf Fortress in spess, but that thumbnail with the guy with a smiley face cut into his Skrillex cut is kind of turning me off.

His look is supposed to enhance his "randomness" as in he's the AI who will generate good and bad events at random. It's the equivalent of the comedy/drama masks, except in Rimworld's bleak setting.

I might be confusing it with another game, but I believe its tutorial was very good and useful, and when it was done you could just keep playing. However, this is also the kind of game where you want to mod the shit out of it to add stuff in. The base game is nothing difficult, but also doesn't have a lot of stuff (I haven't played it since it came out of early access though, so I don't know what's new).

because he's a fucking psychopath. you can start one of his games and get rabid monkey attacks within minutes followed by a survivor crash landing outside your base with 18 gun skill and no hands.

I actually had the same reaction initially, but the art is basically on one screen and that is it. Don't let the bad MS Paint art turn you off of it. It's exactly what you described.

Anyway, does official release actually add anything new?

Hmmm ... never thought of that. Seems like a lot of micromanaging. I mean, if no one eats off the floor and you have enough flashy statues, cannibalism and organ harvesting aren't too much of a mood killer.
