I don't see the issue pointing out stuff like that in old movies and TV shows. Not all of it has aged well and why is it bad to have a conversation with your kid about them.

I think Knightly banning the movies completely is a bit much.

Sleeping Beauty is this way. Prince charming actually ****s our comatose princess, she gets pregnant, and gives birth to kids who accidentally suck out the poison thing (like a thorn or something) out of their mother.

IIRC prince charming is actually just this huge ****boy.

Kristen does have a point though. Prince Charming did rape her in the original story so that does say something about the fairy tail.

The ones about the Little Mermaid and Cinderella are just dumb though.

The thing that is especially dumb about the little mermaid, is if she said her problem is that the story is about a girl selling her soul to the devil for something superficial, and it all working out because her daddy bailed her out, I would totally agree on it being a terrible story.

It's a good thing to teach kids it's not ok to kiss people without permission but if a parent is looking for a story or cartoon or whatever to more effectively get across that point... Snow White is probably one of the worst examples for that.

She was probably watching with them and realized it was a good teaching moment. Have you ever raised a kid? There's not many opportunities to show them something like this, that, in the movie 'is silly' (her words), but in real life is plain wrong. I don't think she was driving home one day trying to think of a way to express the exact situation of kissing someone in their sleep being bad.

I know it's primarily because you guys don't have kids or don't interact/work with kids but I think you don't really think about how easily kids are manipulated because of their innocence. They need to be taught about consent and when things aren't okay at a young age. If an old Disney movie opens up that opportunity then so be it.

My wife is a teacher and it's shocking what a bunch of 10 year olds think is okay because it's done by a family member or friend.

Think about how that moment in Snow White is portrayed... she's assumed to be dead, but she's rescued, saved, romantic, etc. All positive happy shit. It sends mixed messages if you're gonna use that as an example.

Surely there are better examples out there.

In the back of the head or something? Sure. But tbh kissing someone who is sleeping or unconscious on the mouth is pretty weird regardless.

Either way being in a long committed relationship is a very different context. I doubt Kristen Bell's daughter is in one.

No, he was not. I watched the film recently in preparation for a trip to Disney World.

She'd met him, fell in love with him, and expressly hoped to marry him. He already had her consent. The curse even states that it can only be broken by true love's (first) kiss. Had he just been some random guy attempting to kiss an unconscious girl, it wouldn't have awakened her.

And the context was that he had spent months looking for her to ask her to marry him and found her in a state of living death. I'm pretty sure the kiss was meant as a homage / farewell, but hey. We've already accused him of being a rapist. Let's just asy he as a necrophiliac trying to get his jollies and, being shocked that she woke up, ended up marrying her to mask his secret shame. Because, after all, that's probably what Walt Disney had in mind with that film.

It's kinda like watching a knight slay a dragon, then explaining to your child that it's wrong to be violent toward people who are different from you.

The message the parent is attempting to deliver, and the actual context within the story, don't match up.

Batman is a hero and he breaks peoples bones and trains young teens to do the same. If parents want to explain that isn't actually acceptable in real life who cares?
