Instead of going to court and requesting a temporary reduction on the amount of Child Support owed due to losing his job. He simply just stopped paying altogether. Stupid. Unless you're dead you don't just stop a court appointed payment.

Then later he wants the support amount owed to be reflective of his new income amount. But refuses to provide proof of exactly how much he makes to support his claims.

Stop using this as "Marriage is the devil" because this guy did this to himself.

You do have choice, you just dont want to make the decision that does not get you financially fucked.

Having a child does not mean you need to get married or have a girlfriend, you can be a single father.

In all fairness though, unless the mother doesn't contest custody, judges in most countries are going to side with her for getting the kid. I've only seen a dad get sole custody (in a contested case) in EXTREME cases, like the mom was clinically insane or physically abused the kids consistently.

And even if you aren't married, it still means you're on the hook for child support.

What do you mean Irrelevant? Its that high because he stopped paying and when he did it was no where near enough. They calculated the amount per month based upon his wages and he agreed to the amount in 2001.

He was irresponsible in both instances by not adjusting the amount he owed per month due to understandable circumstances of a) losing job and b) lower income.

Both instances he acted stupidly and could've saved himself a lot of trouble by cooperating with the court.

How is the guy owing more than 500,000 because he made the decision to stop paying irrelevant?
How is the guy not providing any sort of proof of his changed income allowing him the chance to lower his per month owed from the previous agreed upon amount irrelevant?

How would this have been different in the US anyways? Child support payments aren't something you can weasel out of (even bankruptcy won't get you out of it), and all things equal I don't see how his situation would have changed even if it were under US law

My justification is that it's fucking ridiculous that child support can be five times what any of us are gonna make in the next five years. That money can help multiple children, not just one

I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that we know how much it generally costs to raise a child, and 17k per month is not it.

Child support is a fraction of your pay

He was making a lot of money when he was ordered to pay that amount, and didn't pay it, hence being in arrears.

Now he makes less and didn't pay the payments when he was ordered to so he still owes the higher amount.

This deadbeat dad stuff also applies in the states. This isn't unique to Canada.
