Most adult gay men do not bother attempting this because there's zero net gain. It's typically a lost cause that can have risky results. They might FAKE flirt to be a sassy tease, but there's generally no real sexual interest when the guy is undeniably straight. Most gay men know this. And in most cases homophobes are paranoid over nothing...

It's the awkward and confused fringe of gay men that do not always understand "straight" equals "incompatible" with homosexuality (which probably make up less than 10% of gay men). They operate on a false premise that being predominately heterosexual is conveniently changeable if they just find the right "notes" to play around their straight best friend. This format of thinking is often rooted in a warped outlook of heterosexual norms and a desperation for an ideal dream partner (ie: best friend...who's unfortunately straight). Gay teens in particular can sometimes go through a phase of this during their period of sexual discovery. In other words: some gay teens will develop an awkwardly "hopeful" crush on their straight best friends if finding other gay peers is scarce). However, this behavior often goes away once these teens become independent adults who can pursue more adult partners through mainstream connections.

Just understand that it's not the majority doing this. If it seems like it's every gay man you meet, it's confirmation bias creating the illusion that all gay men are like that. Most do not because there's zero benefit. It would be like shopping in the wrong department and investing triple the payments for something they can never actually take home...
