It's fine if you can be online almost all the time
but you'd probably get more use out of a tablet + keyboard cover

the main reason to get a laptop is that it's a bigger screen.
a chromebook that's on less than 12" is really not worth it at all imo

We have them available to use at work if we are needing to take a laptop to another place for a presentation or whatever, they do the job.

of course most of them have hdmi ports, mught have a display ports, have an actual usb ports for a mouse, a lot of tablets can't use a mouse at all

chromebooks are pretty good for what they can do but overall they're not as productive as a windows laptop
but the main advantages is: the OS they use is lightweight enough that it works reasonably well compared to windows 10, they're incredibly cheap, a 400 dollar one is going to be more than good enough for most anything you can do on a chromebook
proper keyboard, some can flip 360 with a touch screen to use in tablet mode
full sized hdmi/ethernet (some models)
usb ports
upwards of 8 hours of battey life

downside is you'll be tied to the google eco system or certain apps and it is not a full desktop experience so no full office, photoshop, video editing, games like proper windows ones

you can also just look into installing a linux distro and get a full desktop experience there

I do! It's mainly just so I can browse the internet in bed, and for that purpose it's perfectly fine. It's had some battery issues of late (less than two years old) , but partly that might be my fault for dropping it once.

A Chromebook is something I recently bought but I didn't use it much after discovering that it have all the features my tablet has minus the ability to play most games. And the audio capability is nothing compared to my tablet, as well as the display and resolution and colors. In short, the Chromebook is an inferior version of a decent tablet. However, it does have a bigger screen.

nah, i am considering buying an asus c302 to install arch on though. i think it would make a nice ultraportable linux solution, has the same chipset as the macbook 12" and doesn't look like a pile of garbage aesthetically.

based on this the installation process doesn't seem like it would be that bad to deal with with most distros:
https://www.mrgazz.com/index.php/2017/10/linux-dual-boot-asus-flip-302/

also found some additional documentation for getting everything working here:

I don't know, is there a nice $400 windows machine that doesn't look like a pile of garbage that I can install linux on? Not to hijack the topic but I am open to suggestions.

I want something sub 3lbs, portable with a modern chipset / SSD and USB-C charging.

I have yet to find anything that doesn't look like a fat hunk of plastic full of dead I/O ports.

considering how much I travel and the things I use it for it's immensely useful. I probably wouldn't buy a proper laptop again, they're like cinder blocks in comparison

i have windoze at home on the desktop for anything I couldn't do on a chromebook. shrug

This is the opposite of the problem with Chromebooks. The OS is solid, its essentially Linux and you can drop it into pure Linux if you want. The hardware though is hot garbage, 1/10 of them don't work, and the setup is kinda dumb. I'd buy a regular laptop and stick linux on it if you're going for that sort of setup.

I have a Chromebook (Asus C302). I really like the fact that it's super lightweight (both physically and regarding the OS), and it frees up a lot of potential distractions because you can't dump a lot of extra stuff into it. That helps me when I need to focus on work (which is what I mostly use it for). Google's suite of "Office-lite" products get the job done well enough, although they do still lack some key features.

That being said, I don't think Chromebooks will reach their full usefulness until their compatibility with Windows/OS improves. If you could more reliably retain the files from those platforms, import them into Drive, edit, and finally export back to something like docx with near zero risk of compatibility or formatting issues, then I think that would really up the practicality of Chromebooks.

yeah, i'm never going to windows again if i can help it. i think it's pointless to pay for the licensing fee that gets rolled into the hardware if i'm never going to use it.

i'm on a macbook right now with arch linux dual boot, i have no plans to get rid of it though it may get left behind when i travel because it's an older fat alum unibody model that weighs a lot and i don't want to lug it around, the brick alone is like a 1lb.

I use a Chromebook most of the time, but I work in education, and they're a great asset in the schools because the Enterprise system is relatively simple to use. Also when they get corrupted they can just be wiped and be almost as good as new. I use mine at home for web browsing without fear of corrupting our family machine. My kids used them for school until grade 9 because they are perfect for most school uses (and don't have all the bells and whistles that = DISTRACTIONS). Now that my son is in grade 9, he is using a real laptop with Windows and Office. My daughter in grade 5 is still perfectly happy with a Chromebook.

I would not but a $400 Chromebook; I think that is a waste. Yes, at that price point it makes more sense just to get a laptop. But for $200 (maybe $250) or less, a Chromebook serves many needs.

That's basically a feature of Linux, but I think that Chromebooks have some cloud based features that make them a little more convenient for less tech savvy types.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I bought my chromebook for portability when I'm on the go. it weighs practically nothing and is slim and I still have full access to all my Google apps, bookmarks, etc.

There isn't anything I would need a full fledged laptop for while traveling that I couldn't do with the chromebook
