I know he seems to like blaming the dems on this one, but really, it seems like he benefits most. It's tailor made for his message of illegal immigrants, and those images of literally thousands of illegals marching to the border would be enough to scare any right leaning person to go out and vote. Plus the dems have no real play; there's no civil war or genocide in Honduras that all the other refugees are facing, so it's like htey can just say "let them in!".

It just seems like a win-win for him.

It could go either way. It all comes down to how he responds to it - not so much in terms of the moral quality of it, but how much it appeals to his fanbase (and how much it sets off the Democrat supporters, for that matter - if it drives up more desire to vote among them than among Republicans, it's gonna be pretty bad for him).

You don't see any mass rallies (a la #metoo, SCOTUS etc) or dem representatives supporting them. It doesn't really seem like a hot button issue for them as there's nothing really much worse about their situation than all the other refugees.

On the other hand, it's a gold mine for those on the right who favor a tighter border. trumps hardline stance would really resonate with them.

Fair point, but so long as he can get the military to prevent them from getting to the border, he can avoid that clusterfuck. Like you say, Dems could try to bring it up again but then trump now has the justification that he doesn't want to "see kids ripped from their parents" LOL - remember in his world he was bound by law to separate them. Heck, today he's already taken the position that if the "set foot" in the states they have to look after them. Which means he's gonna go all out to make sure they don't get anywhere close. He could probably justify placing US troops on Mexican soil saying that he told them to make sure the caravan does make it through the country, and now it's their fault they made it that far.
