Poll of the Day > So, I have a brand new kitty...

It's adorable and so tiny. They just started eating soft food a couple days ago, so yeah. I also have a question for some of the people that have cats. I am having trouble identifying the gender. I think female, but I seem to have a harder time with cats. Dogs are pretty easy, but cats always seem harder. But it also might be because she's so small right now.

I guess I'll tag some cat people

How much do they weigh? It might be fairly hard to tell at this point.

It's kind of hard to tell. Very light, though. I was trying to compare her to a 5.5 oz can of food. I would say maybe she weights a little more. I don't have a scale in the house...

I would like to do that for cats and dogs when I'm in a better position. I got this little one from a friend. He didn't want to take them to the shelter. So he was trying to get us at work to take them. So, I did.

You can't tell with kittens easily till there testies drop, until then they both look like they have 2 holes. The girls are further apart I believe it is (could be the reverse), you can look it up to be sure.

Vets can tell you as well, but you could just call her/him snow and then just add John or Joanna based on the eventual sex.

That's not true. I can tell the sex of newborns. It's easy when you've done it a lot but for most people probably not

You have it wrong. The males have their holes further apart. Females have the holes closer and their front hole will appear more oval than circular.

I'm not sure how to get the kitty to eat the food. She looked like she was trying to go to the litter box, so I helped her. And she started to eat the litter, I believe. So, I took her out and put the food in front of her, but she doesn't want it. I made tiny little food and water things out of solo cups, but I think she wants to only eat the kitty litter for some reason...

Yeah. AFAIK. My friend who gave me the cat also gave me the food. I'm pretty sure it's the same as the food that the kittens started eating when they stopped feeding off of their mom... But I could be wrong.

Being that I've never had any that young I don't really know what to say. It will take time for any cat to adjust to a new environment and if it's the same food then eventually things should work out. There's a product called cat milk (comes in a little juice box), maybe you can try that. I guess normal milk isn't good for cats.

Yeah. I remember reading that some time ago.

I may have to try the cat milk. I have to go to the store tomorrow(Pet store to get some stuff), so maybe I can find some there. And I was thinking about getting the vet appointment set up soon. I should be able to since I'm getting paid again somewhat soon...

It's plausible. They can't handle lactose after a certain age or something. Not that I trust everything I read online. Point was to let him know there are other things the kitten might eat.

Yeah, little kittens are hard to sex. It was already covered, but in addition to the distance between the holes, the lower hole on females look like a slit and the boy hole is more round.

I never trust my gendering until it's testacle time though. XD

Kittens are dumb little babies and it can definitely be hard to get them to eat what they're supposed to eat. Good luck with that.

I'm guessing and hoping you're feeding soft food to this adorable little bundle of joy. Try putting a small amount on you're fingertip and gently rub it onto the kitten's nose/mouth/front teeth. This way at the very least it will lick it to clean itself and get the taste, which usually stimulates eating. She's probably just nervous and scared being away from mom for the first time. Make sure she's getting water too as dehydration can come fast at that age.

Thanks. And I'll try that. I can try to get them to eat a little and they might want to eat more. And I had to go to work, so she is in a huge kennel with tiny bowls I made out of Solo cups with food, water, and a couple mixes. I'll probably go home to check on him or her at lunch, if I can.

There is a local one down the street from me. The problem is, I have no idea what the hours are. Though, they are probably going to be closed by the time I get off. So, I may have to go tomorrow...
