I called them about this and they said it's still recommended to boil your water even if you have a filter. They also said to flush the filter system out once the notice is lifted.

Put a pot of water on the stove. Boil it for five minutes. Stick it in the fridge. Or pour it into a pitcher and stick it in the fridge. It'll be good all day. Use it for brushing your teeth and cooking.

Actually doesn't take that much to do, and it's far cheaper than the bottled water.

The boiling water will heat up the other stuff in your fridge though, which is dangerous. Unless you mean to boil the water, and let it cool down before moving to the fridge.

Most common water filters are actually pretty useless. People buy them thinking they'll filter out stuff like lead and fluoride but they don't. At best they'll filter out visible particles.

Distilled water and reverse-osmosis filtered water is the closest to pure you can get.

Why would you want it that pure anyways? Many minerals in water and the flouride in small amounts is actually good for you.

I dont drink water unfiltered anymore. Not since the ridiculousness from the my water utility in NJ has ramped up so much. It feels like every 3 months we get a letter notifying us that the past 3 months, the water tested high for lead.

Why they WAIT to tell us that is beyond me but ffs FIX IT.

Some people have health issues or live in a region where the levels are particularly high. Fluoride is only topically effective and you can get it in toothpaste/mouthwash anyway.

There's no need to drink fluoride as swishing with tap water achieves the same intended effect, and the amount of minerals in tap water is far too inconsequential to confer any possible health benefits, but the contamination that could not be removed (trace heavy metals, unmetabolized prescription drugs) could cause deleterious effects through chronic ingestion.

Cept that there are studies that show that distilled water will leech the plastic from the container if left too long, and there might be issues with it leeching minerals from your body since it is missing so many.

Most "studies" on distilled water are pure hogwash perpetrated by the quack Dr. Mercola. The only thing that's true about distilled water is that it obviously cannot replenish lost electrolytes (but tap water is just as ineffective).

I know you're trying to hate on capitalism but it's the city's water system that failed here, not capitalism. Capitalism (bottled water) is helping people where sorta-psuedo-socialism (city water) failed.

http://www.austintexas.gov/department/water

I'm not at all against a light touch of socialist policies but this is a perfect example of why you need a healthy mixture of both.

I dont know why folks are talking about lead, fluoride, minerals etc, obviously the boil order is to kill any pathogens. Fairly common any time theres broken pipe, drop in system pressure, or central power loss. We had a water main break by the house and had a boil order, usually just temporary
