There has been a major political shift over the past 10-15 years. The left isn't "Liberal" anymore. I have always been a "liberal" yet, with this shift.. apparently I'm "conservative" now, as "conservatives" are more liberal than people who claim tooth and nail to be. All through the media; all of it. normal media, social media, whatever. People on the "left" spew nothing but hate and claim people on the "right" are nazi's, or misinformed.
yet, if you actually pause for a moment.. and i dunno.. look at the truth? The "right" are civil, present only facts, don't get angry, are calm, collective, logical, intelligent.
Okay i'll make one exception: alt-right and left are exactly the same.

I suppose I still consider myself a conservative but I have very little in common with the republican party these days. Probably gonna vote mostly democrat next election--not because they are so great but the GOP is just spiraling and need to have as little power as possible until they go back to the old save before Trump became the status quo of the party.

I don't really fit quite into either side as such, not because I'm the "always take the middle ground" type but simply because there's some stuff I agree with the left on, some I agree with the right on.

I've mostly voted for moderate-left parties, though in the most recent election here I voted for one that's more or less dead center. (Note that under the system we have, a third party vote isn't generally wasted as long as it's one of the larger third parties.)

Thought this was going to be a topic about people's personal views on their political affiliations, but it turned out to just be a bitching session about 'those damn librhels!'.

By the way, if you are American, both your parties are centrist, and only one even remotely leans more to the left.

Balanced, a good mix of offense and defense.

National politics: environmentally conscious Libertarian
Local politics: lean Democratic; willing to raise local taxes for local services

I reconcile the two with a "laboratories of democracy" ethos. We should be free to test economic hypotheses in a manner similar to the scientific method, but in a minimally impositional way. The more local the government, the more feasible it is for unwilling participants to opt out (i.e. by moving one city over).

I find myself increasingly allied with Democrats, although I oppose Democratic Socialism and identity politics.

Modern liberalism and conservatism are definitely in need of new words for themselves. I consider myself rightwing, but NOT in an American way to any degree. I support separation of church and state, a heavily regulated market economy, and believe that the greater good of the nation takes priority over any individual.

I support a constitutional monarchy with increased powers for the monarch so they're not simply a figurehead and direct democracy rather than representative in terms of elected officials, with the leader being able to veto ANY result except his/her own removal from office (but not the abolition of the monarchy itself).

Because there are plenty of people on the left who present only facts, don't get angry, are calm, collected, logical, intelligent. Your claim that no one who holds left-wing opinions possesses those qualities, which are supposedly a monopoly of the right, is not a "fact". At best, it's a prejudice spoken in ignorance; at worst, it's a lie that betrays naked contempt for people who hold opinions different to yours.

There are plenty of people -- far too many -- on both left and right whose toxic tribal politics has persuaded them that their critics and opponents aren't simply wrong, aren't merely misinformed or misguided, but are bad people. Luckily, there are also people -- on both left and right -- who don't stoop to slosh about in the gutter quite so readily.

elected representatives of the right commit physical assault against reporters who have only told the truth, endorse/back murderers and assaulters of reporters who have only told the truth. members of the rank and file on the right drive cars into protesters and send bombs to left-leaning donors and/or abortion clinics.

as foolish as those who hide from the truth on the left are, they're far less a threat to our democracy than those who aggressively seek to destroy it.

but that's what you do on the right these days: follow the leader. the leader endorses violence. the leader tells obvious lies, then lies about having told them. the leader tells his followers to believe his lies are the truth, and his followers claim truth is whatever they say it is.

there's no point in reasoning with such people: the only thing to do is show up to vote, and make sure every other legal voter does, too.
