About Aerith dying?
Like, this was supposed to be something shocking except there's been a huge death scene of a major character in every game leading up to it except 1 and 3. A bunch of people died in 2, Tellah dies in 4. Anna not part of your party but she gets bombed by Golbez and the Red Wings. In 5, Galuf dies. Gilgamesh also dies but apparently not really since he shows up later. In 6, General Leo dies, and Cid probably dies. The one thing you're overlooking: For a lot of people, FF7 was their first FF, and possibly first JRPG outright.
Even for those it weren't, unless they were latecomers to the series as a whole, they likely only played I, IV and VI. And Leo wasn't a major character in the same sense as Aeris was, leaving only IV, and one game hardly makes a pattern. This effect becomes even stronger if they started with VIII or IX, the former of which reverses the major plot death and the latter of which doesn't have one in the first place. --- Proud to be part of the 1% of society that's smart enough to realise Australia is not real. ...
