I invest in ETFs, and upgrade to Vanguard mutual funds when I have enough money in them. Pick an allocation and stick with it. I stole this off reddit but I do:

42.5% US Large Cap
15% International Developed Markets
10% US Mid Cap
10% US Small Cap
10% REIT
7.5% US Bonds
5% Emerging Markets
