I don't think they check with their fingers.

Edit: Wait, I'm for some reason thinking of a colonoscopy.

I annoys me that while we live in an era now where doctors can wire a camera to a blind man's brain that allows him to see. We have machines that can image the brain. We can do a simple blood test to find out what's wrong with us.

Yet we don't have anything better than sticking a finger up your ass to check for prostate cancer.

I don't have insurance anyway but even if I did. Eh. I'm not interested in being prodded and probed until something is found wrong with me. I'll go when I'm not feeling well. "Well by then it'll be too late." one may say. Good. I don't want to live for years with the knowledge of some disease hanging over me and the constant chemo or surgeries. The stress will kill me before the disease ever does. And everyone in my family that's been one of these see a doctor every few months type. Each one of them got something (cancer) that the doctors couldn't help with anyway and they all died. So a lot of good it did. No thank you.

A finger up your ass will give an idea of whether or not your prostate is enlarged, but I'd have thought a PSA blood test was a better indicator of whether or not it may be cancerous.

Look, either your doctor is gonna get in that ass, or the cancer will, and I guarantee you the doctor is gentler. He's got lube, he knows the value of foreplay, and he'll give you a lollipop afterwards if you ask.

Meanwhile, the prostate cancer is just going to tear in there, rearrange your guts, and put you in the ground.

Given the choice, I'll spread for my doctor 100% of the time.

Isn't the survival rate for early prostate cancer close to 100%, but the rate after spreading drops to like 30-40%? Seems like it's worth keeping an eye out for.

Also, isn't a lot of the screening done with blood tests? There is an older guy that works for me that had it, every few months he has to go for a blood test to monitor it.

Theres a reason i said its not routinely done any more on annual physicals. Digital rectal exams (DRE) were previously a standard part of yearly exams but yielded high cost with a lower benefit ratio; lots of patients inappropriately sent for additional testing since the exam itself is fairly subjective (and plenty of cases were also being missed as well). PSA is now a screening tool that we use, but it has low sensitivity with a higher specificity. Lots of things can give you false positive PSA levels but in true prostate cancer its typically pretty high and has become the screening tool of choice for those with symptoms. In reality if you have a high PSA you should see a urologist who has done thousands of DREs who can guide whether biopsy is needed. If a PSA is in the grey zone i will recommend a DRE done by me to help differentiate between benign prostate hyperplasia or more nodular prostate cancer but either way the value will still be trended as DRE obviously wont catch small deep lesions further from the rectal vault. And regardless, if you have symptoms typically i would offer a DRE to assess for tender boggy prostate (prostatitis) or other reasons to be having urinary issues aside from prostate problems.

Regardless OP is irrelevant, people who are having actual prostate issues (issues pissing, ejaculating etc) are fine getting a <30s exam to help circumvent multitime daily discomfort. Home boy is prob like 15

Its routine to assess for epididymitis or orchitis which can extent down from the urethral tract from UTIs, typically from bugs that cause STDs but can happen with others. Should be checked for especially if patient has been complaining of testicular discomfort

I'm very comfortable with myself and giving out information.

To put it bluntly, during that time I had problems urinating, like I would feel like I'd want to piss all the time, but nothing would come out, or I could have just finished up peeing and 5 minutes later I feel like I need to go again, but nothing would come out. Last straw was when I woke up and it felt like I was being crushed down there.

That particular exam was literally 3 minutes, in and out. I figure it this way, I went to a specialist, and I'm not the first person he has seen down there, so why should I feel uncomfortable? I went to him, had the exam done, found out the problem and how to fix it, and the next day felt like a thousand bucks. Not to mention that he gave me great information about all the concerns I should have as I get older.

Same with my prostate exam. Prostate exam was even simpler than that. Its literally 10 seconds for a decade of comfort. They put you on an exam table, 1 finger in, little discomfort and then its done.

Some people complain about the smallest of things. Your doctor has seen thousands of assholes, and trust me, many of them are a lot worse than yours.

Its an exam that the doctor has performed thousands of times, get over yourself and get yourself checked. Better than waking up finding out its too late and your dying of something that was completely preventable. Since then, I've had routine checkups pretty much every 5 years like clockwork. Mind you, I haven't had the need to get those 2 check ups done, but I've had testing for almost all forms of cancer males can get since then, including breast cancer(which is a thing males should be worried about)

Nurses hate guys with tiny penises because it's much harder to insert a catheter in them. Also if you have a huge penis and just came out of surgery and are still passed out in your gown, you will get checked out by all the nurses in the rotation.
