they went through these painstaking lengths to replicate and emulate what it would be like to live in that era as if it were some kind of sim game, but it's all to the detriment of gameplay. the controls are awful, everything has a ton of animation associated with it and the movement and gunplay feel like wading through molasses, witcher 3 without the first few patches controlled good by comparison. there are way too many context-sensitive actions that either don't make sense or are completely unnecessary. there are gauges upon bars upon meters of shit you need to keep track like a fucking survival game and you manage all of that through a convoluted, poorly done inventory system

their writing, voice acting and overall story production value are top notch once again, but the gameplay is raw, unfiltered dog shit

i actively dislike spiderman as a character and thought the new spiderman game was great

the setting is the only thing RDR2 has going for it, and if that's not your cup of tea, there's nothing worthwhile there

This in particular is a concern I've had for a while. I hate games with too many features and things to worry about

These are not comparable concepts.

Not liking a character does not remove the point of the game. The point of Spider-Man (and any super-hero game) is to feel powerful. Just because you don't like Spider-Man doesn't mean the game no longer makes you feel like a powerful badass that can do anything. The point of the game remains intact.

The entire point of RDR is to live a western. By saying you don't like the concept itself, of course you're not going to like the game. Why would you even have fucking bought it in the first place? That's just stupidity.

Not liking Spider-Man and still thinking the Spider-Man game is great would be equivalent to saying you don't like John Marston but RDR could still be a great game. Not liking westerns and playing RDR would be equivalent to saying "I don't like feeling like a strong badass" and then expecting Spider-Man to be enjoyable.

indifference =//= active dislike. i found the first RDR enjoyable because it told a cinematic story in a rockstar open world that was fun to go through, i was neither drawn in or repulsed by the fact that it was in a western setting. it had some of the same issues as RDR2 does (slow pace, poor controls), but whereas that game was still enjoyable in spite of that, RDR2 took the worst parts of 1 and magnified them tenfold so that they overshadow everything else. they went so far down the hole of trying to make you feel like you're in a western that they forgot how to make an enjoyable, fun-to-play video game along the way

even if a person normally wouldn't mind or were even tepidly interested in westerns, the mechanical gameplay aspects of RDR2 are so bad that they would have an awful time playing it. there's nothing there for you unless you're some kind of cowboy-themed renfaire regular

I'm no fanboy, haven't even played it and won't for a long time - but I love the setting a lot and I don't think you need to be a western fanatic to like it. It's a nice break from your usual open world game which is either bustling modern city or sword and magic fantasy world.

I am paying attention to this game because of all the hype it has received and will probably buy it when it gets cheaper or I'm bored one weekend but from what I have seen so far it does seem like a whole lot of riding a horse around a beautiful western setting and not much else. I know there is other stuff but from the little I have seen on twitch it seems like getting from one place to the other is the majority of the time spent in game.

I didn't think the first game was amazing like a lot of people, either. GTA is fun because you can do whatever you want. RDR is like GTA but with a lot of rules.
