The F2P model didn't really exist then (not like it does now), so the idea of continuously sinking money into games wasn't even on the table. It is also worth noting that most genuine money pit games tend not to do so well outside of their handful of whales. The F2P games that really take off are ones where you don't need to spend much (if anything) to have a good time. I was fully into UT back in the day and while I'm not going to start building in this one at least I can keep my FPS skills up until the next decent shooter releases. Doom Eternal probably? Yeah I always say maps go a long way towards extending replay value but here despite it being one map you'll see different areas almost each time. And then they change shit too. I don't like the randomness of the weapons as my chances of picking up bandages or useless bricks are way higher than anything that shoots stuff.
