While its certainly not 100% racist-free, the narrative that the US is in any way racist/sexist/ homophobic on an institutional level is pure hyperbole. Youll certainly fine such people taking power here and there, but the institution itself is not.

As a black man, I have to say that my experience is a bit different than yours. Since Trump's political rise began, I stopped noticing a lot of the subtle racism that was prevalent during the Obama years. Trump has had a positive effect on the division within our nation.

Intent matters. Some people are just ignorant and dont understand how it came off. Youd be surprised what a civil correction can do.

Make new friends among groups of people who share your concerns and people who will need your support. Don't let yourself become invisible, because when a society 'doesn't see difference' they also lose the awareness of hate. A lot of the hate that was kind of wrapped up in dogwhistles have become a lot more blatant since Trump took office. An upswing of violent ideation in political speech has happened alongside some of the most horrific examples of terrorism we've seen in America, and I don't think that's a coincidence. I know Brazil has seen the same.

Hold media accountable and call them out when you catch them in equivocating narratives or airing conspiracy theories fed to them by political hacks.

Keep your own safety in mind, but if you see someone engaging in jingoistic or hateful rhetoric talk to those people and explain to them what they're doing. And then if they keep doing it explain this to everyone else

And if it's safe to do so, be visible and be optimistic. Queer visibility is one of the best political levers you have to effect greater acceptance of queer people in a society. It can certainly be dangerous, but it gets less so as attitudes change. It's frustrating having to gamble on the better natures of others, but that's how power works as a minority.
