I've watched the entire show already. I've heard the books and show kinda split at the 3rd book, is that true?

Yes. Mostly with Robb's wife who is an entirely different character and Tyrion's motivation with a certain crossbow. Other than that, I think it's mostly the same, but this is definitely where they start introducing tiny deviations that balloon into major differences.

The next two books are where things really change.
