Attempting an ongoing VGMrelated task of casual proportions, having enjoyed similar threads here recently.

The premise
Each user can nominate one game in the 2D sidescroller/platform genre. As defined, Super Mario Bros. would be an example of an archetypal candidate, but many subgenres and deviations from the basic formula will also be accepted. Nominations are subject to my capricious tendencies and may be rejected or tabled for any reason.

For each approved game, I will conscientiously rank each track from favorite to least favorite and assign the OST an overall score from 0100. There will probably be no writeups involved, though dont rule out the possibility of the occasional thrilling remark!

Additionally, each track will receive a letter grade of S, A, B, C, or E. There are no Fs in VGM, and there probably arent any Ds eitherthats how good all of it is. The Etier is reserved for OSTs with tracks devoted to quick jingles, samples, sound effects, etc. E for effect! An Eseeming track may be promoted to a higher tier if its particularly important. Whether I include the short stuff will be determined casebycase. The letter grade/tier structure will provide an avenue for comparing/ordering favorite tracks across multiple games, though I have no immediate plans to do that.

If, somehow, other users want to play along by providing their own rankings, thats encouraged. I only ask that you wait until Ive posted my ranking for a particular game as to shield me from influence. Its not a big deal, though. Also this might take me a deceptively long time.

Hopefully this works.

Rules for nomination
To start this off, Im asking for 10 games. One nomination per user, no alts. The OSTs must be reasonably accessible with established, discrete tracks. Once 10 games are approved, nominations will close until all ten have been completely ranked and posted to the spreadsheet. When/if the nominations open again, the rules will be slightly different.

I am implementing a quota system at the beginning in an attempt to skew the games toward the eras that I favor. Of the first ten games:

- At least 8 must have been originally released prior to 2009.
- At least 6 must be from before 1999.
- At least 4 must have been released between 19831998.

Anything earlier than 1983 is ineligible.

Thanks for reading.

Gimmick! (1992)
Composer: Masashi Kageyama

Hopefully haven't heard TOO much of this before. Was debating between this, Kirby Planet Robobot, and Goemon's Great Adventure, but I think that the philosophy behind the Gimmick! soundtrack just makes it stand out nicely.

This game was never actually released, but the composer had backups of his music.

Actually Im not sure if it was a side scroller, I guess nobody knows but the original developers since theres not even a known prototype or anything

I was going to ask about this. If there were any assets out there suggesting this was to be an Adventure of Link type deal, I might consider it. If, more likely, its actually a nonexistent Zelda 1 style game its getting set aside for now. But, you can suggest a different game.

LittleBigPlanet (2008)

Will find and edit in a playlist later for you since there are like 3 different portions of the soundtrack on different albums.

Oh wow, never mind, apparently someone actually did make a comprehensive playlist. I thought it used to be more scattered across Youtube.

Yeah, I may need some help reining in a manageable tracklist for LBP. Im hesitant to include licensed music not originally composed for the OST, but I might make an exception because I like Battles.

The licensed songs are part of the appeal of the overall soundtrack for sure.

I found a different playlist that has longer versions of the interactive music with more variations, do you want that instead? I'm not sure how you'd even rank that music based on your guidelines.

Couldnt hurt to have for reference. And I will be including the licensed songs in the rankings. Thanks

Thanks for all the submissions. Listening is underway and there are still 2 slots left (IIRC, just looking for games from 83-99 now. I messed up the cutoff years in the original post but it shouldn't affect anything.) In all likelihood this topic will purge before the next substantial update, which will probably be in like 2 weeks.

The one piece of info I could find from the composer actually does say something about it being like Zelda, I must have missed that.

In that case lets go with The Smurfs Nightmare (1998) - https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL486A6A7FFA6CC9F1

Nice, gotta have some Alberto Jose Gonzlez in there. Shout out to The Legacy Music Hour podcast for introducing me to his music.

Bump for one last game (1983-1998) to close out nominations.
