Im watching Gooses retrospective right now, and some of these records have moved less than 10 seconds in 20 years.... why? How does it become so optimized so early.

Imagine that being true for like any other game.

Because you were timed on mission completion and could earn rewards for beating them fast enough. That encouraged many players to try to find the fastest strategies, and once they saw how fun it was they began just going for the best times overall.

Okay, I rolled a 14. What's that mean? Hsu

It's kinda more slowly paced and has less glitches to exploit than a lot of games that get speed runs

Less execution blunders to make there so it's relatively easier to optimize I imagine

We were online and the first result in every search engine already by 1998, and boys at the time did LOTS of searching because every one of them was convinced they'd just completed Facility faster than anyone else in human history when they earned the cheat. So we were well positioned to attract new members who pushed our vets to (what we assumed was) the limits of the game already in its infancy.

Which allowed me to have a good project to promote, like I did in my first GameFAQs topic.

I did a writeup on that thread and here's some other history info from those early days, for anyone interested.

Well you're talking about individual level times, which can be under a minute, so 10 seconds can be a lot. There also isn't a lot of opportunity for major clips/skips/sequence breaks. You have to cover a large distance and/or go complete an objective(s), there's no way around it.

Cause Goldeneye was the first FPS ninten kiddies ever played so they played it all day erry day

Goldeneye was one of the defining FPS's back in the days when there really weren't any for consoles. Course they played it. Basically every other FPS was on PC.

I would assume it has less large skipping glitches that require very precise inputs and execution, and no problems with loading that would crash the game and kill the entire run ala Prime 0-00

*has never played 007, so take this guess with a grain of salt*

The game came out in 1997. One year later, the-elite came out. So the community that figured out how to break the game came out really soon, discovering to do stuff I can't even understand how it's possible, such as this:

Yes, that's me, I've been heavily involved since 1999.

Part of the reason we optimized is the lack of going out of bounds or other huge level-breaking glitches, like other people have said, and the other part is what Kirby mentions here.

There was no interest in full game completion speedruns because we assigned point totals from 100 to 1 based on your finish on every level and every difficulty. How good you were at the game was determined by your point total, whoever got the most points was the World Champion and that's what everyone played for. To pull that off you had to be really good at every single level, which is why even the least interesting stages were quickly optimized*.

* by the standard of the times, more seconds have of course been shaved off since then
