I'm not going to give the option for "well, it depends!" Try to answer in general from your experience. Are slow starts ultimately alright?

They're a Yay for me. If it's a good game I don't mind absorbing some narrative and information. I appreciate being shoved in a sandbox too but I more or less appreciate common stuff explained. If I have to deal with people, hopefully it helps them help me.

Not so great for replays but initial experience is great.

I've had good experiences with long openings (like Persona 5) and really bad ones (like Kingdom Hearts 2).

I'm going to say they're negative more often then not.

I figure through replays, one can just beeline the initial stuff.

With OoT, yeah. The beginning of Twilight Princess seems to take two forevers.

For the most part, nay for me. I like my games to be focused on gameplay or freedom. I hate when a narrative tries to railroad me through a section. I think it comes down to the writing being so hit or miss compared to, say, TV shows or movies. If I don't instantly click with a character or storyline, 2 hours being forced to be locked into a linear cinematic is not going to change that.

Just as long as there's a way to skip it on subsequent playthroughs

The beginning of DQ7 still takes about five forevers on 3DS, or an even dozen on PS1.

There's nothing in Persona 4 or 5 that warrants a 4-5 hour intro.

If it's a story focused game I'm generally fine with it.

In general I say Nay but that does not mean a long intro cannot be done right.

It's fine to have a preference. Some games do horrible jobs explaining stuff while others need no explanation. Or they certainly don't need a 5 hour one.

I'm fine with long openings myself but the worst part about them is when you know a friend will love the gameplay but the long opening is driving them off

This, I generally already don't like the beginning of games since I want to get to the cool stuff and have all my options available. A slow beginning makes me just want to quit.
